Another 3 years have slipped by time flies when youre having fun and municipal elections will be held this fall. Nomination packages for Mayor and 6 councillors will be available from City Hall as of August 26, with the nomination period running Oct 4-14. Election signs go up Oct 19, advance voting is Nov 9 & 16, and voting day is set for Saturday, Nov 19. City Hall suggests that if youre considering running you might want to speak to someone whos held the position, to get a sense of the time & commitment that is required. Council meets on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday each month, as well as the 3rd Tuesday. A councillor must also attend committee meetings on other nights as well as community functions. And theres lots of reading: agenda packages which are often upwards of 150 pages, etc., etc. It may well seem to be an overly-public & thankless job where everyone you run into has an opinion about what should be done but those who serve a term or more are absolutely to be commended on their selflessness in dedicating so much time to serving our community. A post-secondary graduate will get the opportunity to enhance and develop job skills through the Govt of Canada's support for a youth employment project. Ok-Coq MP Dan Albas made the announcement last week on behalf of Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Diane Finley. With assistance from the federal Career Focus program, the ASK Wellness Centre in Merritt will organize a career-related placement for one postgraduate. The participant will perform clerical duties, assist with developing wellness plans for clients, and be involved with a community kitchen initiative. ASK Wellness will receive over $15,000 in Career Focus funding for its youth employment project.
