Friday evening at 9:26, the earth shook under Merritt & the Nicola Valley. A 2.6 magnitude quake occurred 19 km north-northeast of town. There were no reports of damage, and none would be expected from an earthquake of that low a magnitude. The Geological Survey of Canada says Merritt can expect an earthquake every 5 to 10 years. They report that over the last 50 years, there's an earthquake once every 7 years in Merritt. All of southwest BC is earthquake-prone, with the highest risk in the Lower Mainland.

The Nicola Valley Community Band begins the fall season onTuesday, September 10 at 7pm, with weekly rehearsals in the Merritt Secondary School Music Room. Over the past 16 years we'veworked on a diverse repertoire and have performed many times around the Nicola Valley. Onrare occasions we have traveled out of townto entertain audiences inplaces such as Kelowna, Langley and most recentlyat Government House in Victoria on the invitation of Her Honour, Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of BC, who is a long time player in our flute section. We enjoy the camaraderie we share that is apleasant by-product of the experience of playing music as a group. We are always interested in attracting new members who used to play in high school or other concert bands, even if it has been awhile. Some of our members hadnt played for several years and were amazed at how much they remembered and how quickly their ability to play their instruments returned. On August 22nd, at approx. 2:45am, Merritt RCMP were flagged down by a man who could not stand up due to his level of intoxication. The 54-year old from Surrey was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. He attempted to walk away from police, but was taken into custody. He then began kicking at the police officers as he was getting into the police vehicle. While the administrative work was being processed at the detachment, the man kicked an officer in the leg. He is facing criminal charges of Assaulting a Police Officer X 2 and Resisting Arrest.
