Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to Computer System Servicing Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module

Set-up Computer Server!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to
encourage and assist the the learners as they do the tasks included in the
module.

4
For the learner:

Welcome to the Module “SET-UP COMPUTER SERVER”. This module

contains training materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency “SETTING-UP SERVER” contains knowledge, skills

and attitudes required for a Computer System Servicing NC II course.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to

complete each of the learning outcomes of the module. In each learning
outcome there are Information Sheets, Task Sheets, and Job Sheets. Follow
these activities on your own and answer the Self-Check at the end of each
learning activity.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your Trainer for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some of the knowledge and skills covered in this
module because you have: o Been working for some time o Already have
completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your Trainer that you are competent in a

particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally
recognized so you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a
qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous trainings show it to
your teacher. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this
module, they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If
you are not sure about the currency of your skills, discuss it with your
Trainer.

After completing this module ask your Trainer to assess your competency.
Result of your assessment will be recorded in your competency profile. All
the learning activities are designed for you to complete at your own pace.

Inside this module you will find the activities for you to complete followed by
relevant information sheets for each learning outcome. Each learning
outcome may have more than one learning activity.

Information Sheet 1.2-1
Computer Server

Learning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, the

students/trainees must be able to familiarize computer server and its
components.

Installing Active Directory and DNS

 The first step is to assign a ip to the server that you going to deploy
the AD. Its nessary to install it as DNS server too. So its better to have
fixed ip it doesn't mean you cannot install AD without fixed ip address
but it will solve lot of issues if you used fixed ip.

In here the server ip is 10.0.0.14. Since we going to make it as DNS server

too you should use the same ip as the preferred DNS server.

8
 Next step is to install the Active directory roles. Unlikely the older
version of windows servers Microsoft highly recommend to use server
manager option to install roles before you run dcpromo.

 Click on start menu and select the Server Manager

 Select the roles from the right hand panel and click on add roles
option.

9
 From the roles list select the "Active Directory Domain Services" role
and Click "Next"

 Review the confirmation and click on "Next"

10
 Review the installation confirmation and click on "Next"

 It will take few minutes to complete and when its done you will get
this confirmation. And then click on "Close"

11
After that you will need to do a reboot.
 After reboot please open up the "server Manager" again. And then click
on "Roles" there you will see the "Active Directory Domain Services" is
successfully installed in there. click on it then you will get a window
like below.

In their please pay attention to the message

12
So please click on that link and it will start the DCPROMO wizard.
So next step to go through the DC promo wizard.
 To start the installation click on "Next"

 Click on "Next"

Since we going to install New domain Controller in new forest please select
the option "Create a new domain in new forest" option and click on "Next"

13
 Now we have to provide the name for our domain controller. It must
be FQDN. In our case I used rebeladmin.com as the domain. Please
click "Next" after it.

 In this window it will ask to select forest function level. If you going to
add server 2003 domain controller to your forest later don't select the
function level as server 2008. If you going to use full features of 2008
Ad you must select forest function level as server 2008. In my case I
used server 2008. Click on "Next" after the select.

14
 In next window since it's the first DC we should make it as DNS server
too. Leave the default selection and click on "Next"

 If the wizard cannot create a delegation for the DNS server, it displays
a message to indicate that you can create the delegation manually. To
continue, click "Yes"

15
next window it will show up the database location. It its going to be bigger
AD its good if you can keep NTDS database in different partition. Click on
"Next" after changes.

16
 In next window its asking to define a restore mode password. Its more
important if you had to do a restore from backup in a server crash.
Click on "Next" after filling it.

 Next window is giving you a brief of the installation. Click on "Next"

 Then it will start the installation of the AD. It will take some time to
complete. After complete of the installation perform a server reboot.

17
 After the reboot now you can login to the domain. Please use the login
as following example
User name : your domain\administrator
Password : XXXXXXXX

 Now its done and you can view the active directory options on
administrative tools menu

18
How to Create Users and User Templates in Windows Server 2008
Active Directory
You probably already know that a User Account in Active Directory is
an Active Directory Object, or simply said, a record in an AD database. Most
of the time we create user accounts for people, however user accounts can
also be created for applications or processes.
User accounts allow a person to access resources on a network. But
we can just as easily deny access to certain resources on the network
through the user account. That’s why, User Account Objects are quite
important and very useful.
Today I’ll show you how easy it is to create a new user account, create
a user template and how to use a template in Server 2008 Active Directory.
Next week we’ll discuss User Groups and Organizational Units. Now, let’s
get started with creating a user account.
How To Create a New User Account in Active Directory
1. To start let’s go ahead and open up Server Manager

2. Next we will open up the Roles section, next to Active Directory Users

and Computers section and finally the Active Directory Users and
Computers. You should now see your domain name.

19
3. We are going to click on our Users section where we are going to create a
new User Account. To do so, right-click on the blank section, point
to New and select User.

4. In this window you need to type in the user’s first name, middle initial
and last name. Next you will need to create a user’s logon name.

20
In our example we are going to create a user account for Billy Miles and his
logon name will be bmiles. When done, click on the Next button.

5. In the next window you will need to create a password for your new user
and select appropriate options.
In our example we are going to have the user change his password at his
next logon. You can also prevent a user from changing his password, set the
password so that it will never expire or completely disable the account.
When you are done making your selections, click the Next button.

21
6. And finally, click on the Finish button to complete the creation of new
User Account.

Setting Up DHCP in Windows Server 2008 R2

To get started, fire up the Server Manager, right click on roles, and then
select add roles.

22
You will be prompted with the normal “Before You Begin” screen, and after
clicking Next you’ll be able to choose DHCP Server.

Next you’ll want to select the network connection to bind the DHCP protocol
to.

23
Put in the IP address of your DNS Server, which in this case is the same
machine–but be careful not to put the loopback address (127.0.0.1) as this
will be the address your clients will go to for name resolution.

24
Click next again to skip the WINS setup, this will bring you to creating a
DHCP Scope, where you can click the Add button.

Now you need to:

 Give your scope a name
 Enter the first address that you want available to clients to use
 Enter the last address that you want available to clients to use
 Enter the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0)
 Enter the IP address of your default gateway (usually your router IP
at .1)

25
26
Once you have clicked on OK, you can click next 4 times to get to the
confirmation screen where you can finally click install.

Once the installation is complete your DHCP will be functioning, and you
can start managing your DHCP server right away.

27
File Sharing
To install the File Services role, perform the following steps:
1. Launch the Server Manager, scroll down to the roles summary, and Click
Add Roles.
2. When the Add Roles Wizard appears, choose the File Services role and
click Next.
3. On the next page, which includes Introduction to Files services, Things to
Note, and Additional Information sections, take note of the information
and check out a few of the links. When you are ready to proceed, click
Next.
4. Next, you see the role services you can install (see Figure 1), depending
on what you want to accomplish with your file server. You can really pick
and choose the components you would like to install. Just choose File
Server for file/folder sharing.

After installing the file server role. Create a folder in drive C or where you
want to put the folder

28
29
After selecting the drive where you want to create your folder, right click on
the space on your drive (make sure that you do not select any file or folder
when you press the right mouse button) then select new>folder and left
click.

Then name your folder the desired name you want

30
After Creating a folder, press right click on your folder and select properties

Then select the sharing tab and under the sharing tab select share and
choose who you want to share your folder with

31
Folder Redirection GPO Settings
Since Folder Redirection is in the User Configuration portion of a GPO, one
can create multiple different policies and apply one to each distinct user
population by filtering the security settings in the properties of the
GPO. This allows administrators to redirect some users' folders to pre-
configured directories, that the users do not have sufficient NTFS
Permission to alter, and to redirect other users to folders that are self
maintained.
Folder Redirection settings are located in User Configuration-> Windows
Settings -> Folder Redirections.  In that node one will find:

To configure an item, right-click and select “Properties”.  This exposes the

configuration UI for the specified folder.  In a single GPO one can either
configure the folder to redirect to a specified location for all users to which
the GPO applies, or one can configure the folder to redirect to a specified
location based upon group membership.

32
Enabling Remote Desktop Using Group Policy

You can also use Group Policy to enable Remote Desktop on host
computers. To enable Remote Desktop on all computers in a specified
organizational unit (OU), open the Group Policy object (GPO) linked to the
OU using Group Policy Object Editor, enable the following policy setting and
add users to the Remote Desktop Users group:

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows

Components \Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\
Connections\Allow Users To Connect Remotely Using Remote Desktop
Services

Enabling Remote Desktop on computers using Group Policy also enables the
Allow Connections From Computers Running Any Version Of Remote
Desktop (Less Secure) option on the computers targeted by the GPO. To
enable Remote Desktop using the Allow Connections Only From Computers
Running Remote Desktop With Network Level Authentication (More Secure)
option instead, you must enable the following policy setting in addition to
the preceding one:

33
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows
Components \Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\
Security\Require User Authentication For Remote Connections By Using
Network Level Authentication

Note By default, when the first policy setting is enabled but the second
setting is not configured, local administrators on the targeted computers
have the ability to change the Remote Desktop security level on their
computers to Allow Connections Only From Computers Running Remote
Desktop With Network Level Authentication (More Secure) if desired. When
the second policy setting is enabled, the option Allow Connections From
Computers Running Any Version Of Remote Desktop (Less Secure) on the
Remote tab is unavailable and appears dimmed.

Deploy Printers via Group Policy on Windows Server 2008 R2

Every office has printers, and they all need to be connected.  If you have an
office with a Windows Server domain, you can easily connect your printers
using Group Policy.   Your printers and print drivers for your various
operating systems must be installed and shared on the server before you
begin.
This example is shown using Windows Server 2008 R2. To deploy your
printers using Group Policy, you first need to install the Print and Document
Services Role.  Open Server Manager, right click Roles, and choose Add
Roles.  Select the Print and Document Services role. When installing the
role, you need only choose Print server.

After you have installed the Role services, go back into Server Manager and
browse to Roles\Print and Document Services\Print Management\Print

34
Server\<Servername>\Printers.  Right-click on the printer you want to
deploy, and choose Deploy with Group Policy

After you have chosen Deploy with Group Policy, Click Browse to select the
Group Policy you want to use, then select it.  After choosing the policy, click
the check boxes to assign the printer on a user or computer basis (either per
user or per machine).  Then click Add

After you click Add, you can see the Printer name, the GPO that you
assigned it to, and the Connection Type (per user or per machine).  You can
add the printer to as many policies as you want.

Your users should not be administrators of their machines, which means
that when your printers attempt to install themselves, it won’t work.  There
are some changes that need to be made to the GPO assigning the printers so

35
that non-administrator users can install them.  Open the GPMC (Group
Policy Management Console) in Administrative Tools and browse to:
Computer Configuration | Policies | Administrative Templates |
Printers
Right-Click Point and Print Restrictions and choose Properties.  Click
Enabled.  Clear the checkboxes (if checked) that say “Users can Only point
and print to these servers” and “Users can only point and print to machines
in their forest”.  In the “When installing drivers for a new connection” box,
select “Do not show warning or elevation prompt”.  These settings only apply
to Vista and later.  If you are running Windows XP, hang your head in
shame, because it’s no longer supported.
