1 Scope

This pad of EN 10246 specines ihe requiremenis for auionratic full peripheral ulirasonic shear wave (including
phased atray technlque) and Lamb wave testjfg of seamess and welded steel iubes, with ihe excepiion of
submerged arc-we d {SAW)tubes, forthe deieciion oflongii!dinal imperfections. This European Standard specifies
,cceptance levels and ca ibration procedures.
This pari of EN 10246 is applcable to ihe fspecion of iubes wiih af outside diameier > 10 mm, and with an
outside dlameter-io-ihlckness raio > 5.

For tubes wiih an outside diameter'ioihickness raiio < 5, one of ihe options specified n Annex B shall be lsed by
asreement belween p!rchaser and nranufacturer.
The European Slafdard EN 10246 'Non-desiruciive test ng of sieeliubes' comprises the parts shown in Annex A.

2 General requirements

2.1 The u irasonic nspectiof covered by this Pad ot EN 10246 is lsua y carried out on iubes afier conrpterion of
allihe pimary producton process operaijons.

The jnspeciion shall be carried olt by suiiably trained qualified and conrpeient personne approved by the

2.2 The tubes to be tesied shal be sufficienily siraghl to ensure the validity of the test. The suf€ces shall be
sufiicienily frce from foreign matier, which could interfere wiih the validiiy ofihe tesi.

3 Method of test

3.1 The tubes shal be tesied lsing an ulirasonic shear wave or Lanrb wave technque for the deiection of
predominantly ongitudinal imperfec{ions.

3.2 DLrrng iesUng, the tubes and the iransducer assenrby shall be moved relaiive io each oiher so that the
whoe ofthe iube lenglh is scanned.

It is recognised thal ihere rnay be a shori engih at both iube ends which cannot be tested. Any untested ends shall
be deat wiih in accordance wiih the requirements oilhe appropriate produci standards (see also Annex C).

The relative speed of movemeni du ng iesUng shall not vary by more than i 10%.

3.3 Duing testing, the iubes shall be scanned in two opposing ci.cur.fercntial dkections of beam travel, Lrnless
olherwise asreed beiween purchaser and manufaciure.

3.4 The ultrasonic lest frcquency to be applied shall be in the €nge of 1 l\.4H2 to 15 l,4Hz for shear wave
lechniq!e and in the range of 0 3 N4Hz io 1 l\,1H2 for Lamb waves, depending upon ihe ihickness and surface nnlsh
ofthe lube to be iested.

3.5 The maximLrm widih of each indjvidual transducer, nreasured parallelio the major axis ofthe iube, shal be
25.nm forshear weves and 35 mm ior Lamb waves.

For U1 and U2 caiegory t'rbes wlth an outslde dlameter equal io or less ihan 50mm, the width of any one shear
wave irafsducer is nomally resiricted io a nraximum of 12,5 mm (see also 4.3).

3.6 The equipmenl shall be capable of classlrying lubes as eiiher acceptable or suspect tubes by means of an
auionraiic i gge/alarm leveJ conrblned wlth a nra.king a nd/ or sori ng system.

3.7 Where manlal Lrltrasonic testing of !ntested tube ends and/or locai suspect arcas is rcquired, this shal be
caried orn ln accordan.e wiih Annex C
