CONSULTANT :

The M.S. tank, cover and the other fabricated components shall be painted with
polyurethane based paint system only on the exterior surface.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

The tank after fabrication should be cleaned by sand paper or wire brush thoroughly.
The welding spatters should be removed. The welding fluxes should be removed with
chisel. Oil and grease should be fully removed and dried by conventional method.

The metal surface should then be SHOT BLASTED at SA 2 ½ standard shots. Care
should be taken, that complete tank and the cover surface is covered in shot blasting.
T – type stiffener where shot blasting gun cannot reach, from inside, should be
cleaned well with sand paper. The inside surface of the lifting lug pad should be
cleaned with sand paper. Backside of cable box, which are not accessible by the gun
after welding, should be first shot blasted and primed before welding to the tank. The
Epoxy Polyamide Zinc Phosphate Primer (GP Prime 201) should be applied at these
places. The OTI / WTI Pockets, Radiator pockets and headers, drain pipe, sampling
valve pipes, filter valve pipes should be blanked before shot blasting.

After shot blasting, the surface shall look white and dry. Dust on the surface shall be
completely removed by compressed air application. Inside threads should then be
filled with grease. The studs also should be applied with grease.

PAINTING PROCEDURE:

After the shot blasting treatment, the MS surface is prone to rusting. Hence, the
PRIMER should be applied within 4 hours of time.

The Ethyl Zinc Silicate primer – Grey in color (GP Prime – 402) available in 2 – pack
system shall be mixed in the given proportion, stirred well and applied on the outer
surface of the tank. Two coat of this primer should be applied so that the thickness of
the primer obtained shall be about 50 Microns. Care should be taken that complete
outer surface is covered with the primer. A curing time of 12 hours has to be given
before applying the intermediate coat.

INTERMEDIATE COAT:

The intermediate coat shall be applied only after drying of the primer. Intermediate
coat shall be Epoxy polyamide MIO (GP guard – 233) brown in color of about 25
microns shall be applied.

POLYURETHANE PAINT SYSTEM

This product also is available in 2 - pack system. The components shall be mixed in
the proportion given by the manufacturer.

INSIDE PAINTING:

The inside surface of the tank should be painted with TRANSFORMER OIL
RESISTANT paint. For this, mix the THINNER with inside transformer oil resistant
paint to maintain the spraying viscosity of 30 sec. Apply complete inside surface of the
tank and the cover with this paint. See that no surface is left unpainted.

FINAL PAINTING:

Apply EPOXY PUTTY to the outside surface to make the surface even. Apply fine sand
paper of (zero number) and make the surface suitable for paint application.

Apply first coat of final paint after fully drying of intermediate coat. For this mix the 2
components of the paint in the proportion specified by the paint manufacturer.

The final paint shall be Aliphatic Polyurethane (GP Bond – 141) of shade 631. The
coating thickness shall be around 25 microns.

Thus the total paint system thickness shall be around 100 microns.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:
1. The compressed air for paint application should pass through dehumidifier
before entering the spraying gun.
2. Painting operation should be carried out in the fully dry condition only.
3. Do not apply paint during rain, fog or mist.
4. Check the date of manufacture and the shelf life before taking the paint for use.
5. Apply the paint with brush, where the spray gun cannot reach.
6. Individual component of the paint should be stored in cool, dry and covered
condition away from the heat and ignition.

TESTS:
1. Measure the film thickness after every coat.
2. Carry out the peel off test as per standard IEEMA – 9
