Is Tourism bound by social class?

We all know that social class is a set of concepts in the social sciences and political theory centered
on models of social stratification which occur in a class society, in which people are grouped into a
set of hierarchical social categories, the most common being the upper, middle and lower classes.
Lumsdon, (in Page 2009) suggests that 'social class is considered to be one of the most important
external factors, assessed primarily by occupation and level of income while Tourism forms a large
part of today's society; 'Tourism and travel has been part of the human experience for millennia'.
According to what I have research, one of the factors that can prevent people from tourism is social
class. A very good is the Titanic movie wherein it demonstrates social exclusion. The RMS Titanic
shows the class barriers that have existed in the past. According to think quest (no date) it states
that the third-class passengers were thought very little of, there were barriers that prevented them
from mixing with the other higher-class passengers; it was these physical barriers that caused many
of the fatalities. Now we have to build on this progress to raise wages and incomes and to
strengthen the standing of working families in a new economy, as a 21 st century college student I
can see that even though Tourism became even bigger business internationally a lot of people
cannot still afford to travel because of lower income, it’s too expensive that we cannot afford it. It
made me realize more when I have an article about a college student who experience travelling
when a student organization in college sent him to a leadership conference in Columbus, Ohio
during the summer of 2003. He was both excited and terrified. He had no clue how to go through
security; he overpacked a duffle bag and could not fit it in the overhead bin; and he struggled with
navigating the new environment of an airport. And, he could not call his family for tips because none
of them had ever flown either. He still thankful for the gentlemen who sat next to him on that first
flight from Baton Rouge to Memphis; they had the awareness and patience to explain each noise to
him to ease his anxiety and they also helped him find his next gate.
I clearly understand him because as I have said a lot of people doesn’t have the privilege to travel
because of our social status in life. Lucky those rich people who can afford anything they want and
we who belong to lower class we need to work hard for us to afford anything we want in the future, to
have a good life and travel the world without worries.
