The RRL
A review and related literature or literature review is a written
summary of published research studies and relevant works
about a particular subject matter that is related to the
researcher’s main topic.

It is one major activity in research that makes you examine or

study again the concepts or ideas related to your research that
people have published in books, journals, or other reading
materials in the past.

The researcher examines the central issues and problems

discussed in previous studies as well as the findings and the
quantitative or qualitative method used.
01 Review of Related
Literature
Purpose of RRL
1. To find out the connection of your research to the current
conditions or situations of the world. They can replicate a
previous study to test the validity of its results and to confirm or
add to the conclusion made or contradict it.

2. To know more about theories or concepts underlying your

research and to learn from them with respect to your own
research study. Through the review, the researcher learns:
• What other researchers have already studied about the
topic.
• The research methodology and theory used in previous
studies
• The gaps in the existing studies on the topic.

02 Review of Related
Literature
Purpose of RRL
3. To obtain information on the accuracy or relevance of your
research questions. A literature review delimits the researcher's
topic.
4. To familiarize the researcher with technical terms related to
the research. A researcher can learn about the writing skills of
other researchers through a literature review. They can learn the
different elements of a good research study.
5. To discover the relation of the chosen research with the
previous studies. A review of related literature can stimulate the
creativity and curiosity of the researcher because it can provide
new insights and ideas about his or her chosen topic.

02 Review of Related
Literature
RRL in Quantitative Research
There are two (2) basic methods of reviewing the related
literature:

1. Traditional - It is used in Qualitative research. It has no

methodological approach. It uses for open-ended and
subjective research questions.

2. Systematic - It is used in Quantitative research. It is a

"question-driven methodology" that begins by asking questions
- one big question (the main problem) and a set of sub-
questions that deal with specific aspects of research.

Steps in Conducting Systematic
Review
Adopting a systematic review of related literature prevents the
researcher from being biased in dealing with the varied forms of
literature. A systematic review of related literature has the
following sequential steps:

• Clarifying the research questions.

• Planning the research based on your understanding of the
research questions.
• Searching for literature
• Listing criteria for considering the values of written works
• Evaluating the quality of previous research studies.
• Summarizing the various forms of knowledge collected.

In-Text Citation and Referencing
Styles
All reading materials related to the research are intended to
review or re-examine, and offer concepts, ideas, or information
from other people.
Referencing is a method used to demonstrate to the readers
that the researchers have conducted a thorough and
appropriate literature search and reading.
Referring to authors within the main body of the paper is called
CItation or In-text Citation; at the end of the paper, it is called
Bibliography or References.
The two (2) most commonly used referencing styles are the
Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American
Psychological Association (APA).
