1. ABSTRACT The most representative work of literary realism is the realistic novel.

The realistic novel

developed its own convention of describing life which is based on a certain point of a view, ie. it is based
on one the understanding of reality as a sequence of events connected in a causal way. The literary
convention of realism describes indifferently and objectively based on the idea of life as series of events
that can be viewed ethically. It describes the fate of one or more individuals in a longer time span, from
its beginning to its end. One of the most representative novels of realism is Madame Bovary by Gustave
Flaubert. The main protagonist of Madame Bovary is Emma Bovary, who in her search for happiness
descends into adultery and debts, destroys her own family and ends her own life in suicide. The word
„fate“ is often connected with Emma because everything she went through she had to go through and
she had to end that way. She had to die because as a girl who was destined family and rural life she
chose the unreachable search for happiness.
