ATHLETES’ VILLAGE Nurturing the Champions

(A Mixed-Use High-Rise Development + Residential + Sports-Commercial Complex)

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Sport is a vital component of people’s lives all over the world. It helps people stay
12`physically active and fit, and it’s a preferred pastime for fostering relationships
between friends and family. Sports are an activity that Filipinos are often quite
passionate about the Philippines.

The Philippine sports industries are thriving not only today but even before. We have
many competitive advantages that are fuelling the growth of these sectors, within
thePhilippines, throughout Southeast Asia and even on the global stage, like the king of
the boxing ring Manny ‘Pacman Pacquiao, Billiard Legend Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, Chess
Grandmaster Eugene Torre, Lydia De Vega of track & field, the king of the Bowl
Paeng Nepomuceno, and many more who are gearing to create their own marks. But
one of the challenges that we are facing is that our country does not have proper and
enough facilities to support the retired and blossoming athletes to maintain and nurture
their skills and interest by being in the ‘athlete- centric’ environment.

CHALLENGE

To challenge the students to make a difference and to take part in shaping the future
and yet keeping the culture alive among us Filipinos. The project should create a place
to provide broad-based, accessible programming and continually enhance sporting
infrastructure to give every Filipino the opportunity to pursue their sporting interests and
hone and develop their skills. This is to provide opportunities to spot young talents who
can be offered pathways to develop, and potentially represent the country. Also, to give
value to our retired athletes, honor them by giving them a chance and be part of the
new generations of athletes by being their instructors or coaches. This project as well
will give hope to our brothers and sisters with disabilities but with interest in sports. This
will open the opportunity for them to pursue and join the paralympics.

The architecture will be the driving force of sports development in the Philippines
through a well designed environment offering universal spaces, functional facilities and
a sense of place that will bring progressive value to sports .
The target programmes will focus on the physical, mental and spiritual development of
the Athletes by considering the best way on how athletes move and occupy the space.
Also developing new forms of training ground from architectural spaces is highly
recommended. Incorporating warm up jogging paths in hallways, bringing nature in the
space for therapeutic function, promoting organic and healthy living by urban farming, a
meditation space for self reflections and a welcoming ambiance that Athletes may call
“This is their home.”

CRITERIA

1. SUSTAINABLE - Integrating 360deg

systemic thinking in design approach
must be a part of the norm practice.
(energy, water, food, green, public space
and waste)

2. ACCESSIBLE - A public built space

like a sports facility, catering to the
community as a whole needs to be easily
accessible and maximize its reach. The
physically challenged society has taken a
huge leap and has started participating in
Paralympics, but there are hardly any
facilities for the physically disabled
audience in

3. STANDARD DIMENSION AND;

ERGONOMIC -It is the designer’s role to
follow the standard court sizes, the height
of the net or basket, minimum distance for
the audience to observe the matches, etc.

4. INCLUSIVE DESIGN - Considers the full range of human diversity with respect to
ability, language, culture, gender, age, and other forms of human difference.

5. FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE– The ability of a building to be flexible and adaptable

will enable it to be used despite changes in operational requirements, whereas an
inflexible building might have minimal scope for use in the near future.

6. INNOVATIVE – The general perspective in terms of technology is the adoption of

the latest and most advanced technology.
AREA SELECTION

Pick a site located in the Philippines. Use Site Justification process for your analysis.
The site area cannot be larger than 5 hectares or 50,000 square meters with a minimum
of 3 hectares or 30,000 square meters. The site reflects the need of the
facilities.Analyze the population census of your selected site at the macro level and
within local context.

Investigate issues faced by the age groups in the area, supported by real-world data
that must be cited and submitted. Propose a new architectural intervention that could
respond to the challenges identified.

Important Notes

- Your proposal should justify your decision on the basis of relevance, integration,
impact and innovation.
- Designs must be sustainable and have minimal impact on the environment.
- Designs must be climate resilient; able to withstand all weather conditions in the
selected locale.
- Incorporating Nature/ecological systems is a must; supported by analysis of how
the networks or ecosystems are interwoven and not as ad-hoc or add-on
aesthetics.
- Designs must optimize use of resources, in view of the current state of the
planet’s natural resources.
- Designs must be based on or reflect real-world data, such as population census
of selected site/city/country from relevant sources.
- This challenge cannot be solved by architecture alone. You are encouraged to
consult a sociologist, biologist or ecologist where possible, or at the very least,
make inroads into available knowledge on sciences.
- Your approach should illustrate a win-win solution for both social needs and
physical/environmental contextuality.

Note:

Requirements are not limited to what were listed above, feel free to add and
explore if needed for further explanation of your project.
