WHY ARE WE LOSING ALL OUR GOOD PEOPLE? II

Introduction

Mary Donillo, the director of Human Resources at Sambian Partners, an architectural firm, are

experiencing a talent drain of their top performing employees. Tom Forsythe, the director of

Commercial Design, has accepted a position with Sambian Partners’ largest competitor J&N. With only

positive feedback from Forsythe in the exit interview, Donillo’s last option is to meet with the company

CEO Helen Gasbarian. Soon after the exit interview, Forsythe contacted his partner and it is revealed

that there are more underlying issues regarding the company structure. To gain more insight, Gasbarian

instructed Donillo to conduct their annual employee survey ahead of schedule. Despite the lack of

conclusive results from the survey, the survey did conclude the negative that the managers cared more

about awards than the work they were doing. Bob Wortham, President of Engineering, informed

Gasbarian of the rumor about Adrienne Perle leaving the company to join J&N, following Forsythe. A

conversation between Gasbarian and Perle resulted in Gasbarian promoting Perle to prevent her

resignation from the company, leaving Donillo to question if this decision will benefit or be a

disadvantage for the company.
