There is little evidence of a link between the amount of time teenagers spend on devices and their general
wellbeing, a new study has suggested. Even just before bedtime, being online, gaming or watching TV is not
damaging to young people's mental health, study authors said.

Some previous studies found links between screen time and health. According to these studies, teenagers' mental
and physical health could be damaged by excessive screen time. For example, research at Cambridge University
found that using the Internet or playing computer games was associated with poorer grades. A 2017 study from
Louisiana State University found links between TV-watching and computer use and moderate depression. A 2018
San Diego University/ University of Georgia study suggested one hour of screen time might mean children and
teens have less curiosity, lower self-control and less emotional stability.

The Oxford University study used data from three countries - the UK, US and Ireland - and 17,000 adolescents, and
used both self-reporting and time-diary techniques (which ask teens to record what they are doing at specific times
of day). The authors of the study said that they couldn’t just rely on self-reporting alone, as some previous studies
have done, because frequent Internet users often do not realize how many hours they spend online, while less
frequent users often think they spend more time online than they actually do.

According to this study, the effects of digital screen use on adolescent wellbeing can’t be seen as a public health
problem. However, screen time can become excessive in individual cases, and screens should be avoided for one
hour before bed since there are other reasons beside mental health for children to need a good night's sleep.

Suggested answer:
Some studies have suggested that using the Internet or playing computer games excessively can affect teenagers in
several ways. It can affect their mental and physical health. It can lead to poorer grades. It can make teens become
less curious and emotionally stable and have less self-control. It can lead to isolation and depression.
However, recent studies have suggested that digital technologies, including video games, can be highly educational
and can develop students intellectual and emotional intelligence. They can improve problem-solving skills, empathy
and interactivity. They can also promote social and cultural learning, leading to more peaceful and sustainable
societies.

2. Yes, I do. I use it for texting and talking to my family and friends.
3. I think they have many benefits. It’s possible to keep in touch with our friends and family and interact with people
across the world with one click. They also allow us to share photos, videos, comments…
4. It’s … because…
5. It can have a negative effect on your schoolwork and on your health, and it can affect your social life and the way
you interact with your family and friends.

We can communicate with people around the world, speaking foreign languages and learning new vocabulary. And
we can have all this fun without leaving home. What about you? What’s your opinion on the topic?

pain and neck pain, eye pain and blurred vision, concentration problems, etc.

PART 3
Student A: I can see a group of students in a classroom or in a library. The students are sitting and looking at their
computer screens. They all seem to be doing their schoolwork. It looks like they are having a very interesting class.
The students seem to be having fun.
Student B: I can see a group of students and their teacher in a classroom. The teacher seems to be explaining
something to a student and she is paying attention to what the teacher is saying. The students seem to be doing

Student B: I think they can promote the improvement of our problem-solving skills, as well as new ways of learning.
We can communicate with people all over the world, speaking foreign languages and learning new vocabulary. We
can do our research online without leaving the classroom. What about you? What’s your opinion on the topic?
Student A: I think you’re right, but there are some disadvantages, too. We can easily become disconnected from the
rest of the class and distracted. The information we find may be incorrect or fake. We may have problems of
dependency or depression. We can also have physical problems such as back pain and neck pain, eye pain and
blurred vision, concentration problems, etc.
Student B: But students would be more motivated, and communication between teachers and parents would be
easier. Besides that, we would be better prepared for our future…
Student A: You’re right, again, but students may cheat while doing their schoolwork, and the Internet access may fail
or be limited…
Student B: That’s true, but classes would be more interesting and motivating if teachers used these interactive
technologies. And students would probably be more creative.
