HUMAN REPRODUCTION

ONE MARK QUESTIONS

1. What is ovulation? (M-14)

The release of the secondary oocyte / ovum from the ovary/ Graafian follicle
OR
It is process of formation of ova in the ovary.
OR
It is the process of release of ovum from the ruptured graafian follicle on the 14 th
day of menstrual cycle

2. Name the cells that secrete androgens. (M-14)

Leydig cells / Interstitial cells

3. What is Menopause? (J-14)

In human beings, menstrual cycles ceases around 50 years of age; that is termed as
menopause.
OR
Termination/Stoppage of menstrual cycle in females of age 50 and above

4. Name the physical and physiological connection between maternal body and
embryo (foetus) (J-14)
Placenta

5. Why is oxytocin necessary for parturition? (M-15)

It causes contraction of uterine muscles.
OR
It causes the mild uterine contraction at the time of delivery

6. What is menarche? (M-16) (J-18)

The first menstruation begins at puberty is called menarche.

7. What is colostrum? (M-16)
The milk produced during the initial few days of lactation is called colostrum.

8. Ovulation takes place on 14 day of menstrual cycle. Why? (M-16)

Because of LH surge/maximum level of LH.

9. Mention the function of Sertoli cells of testes. (J-16)

Sertoli cells provide nutrition to the germ cells/developing sperms.

10. Name the Hormone Secreted by Corpus Luteum. (J-16)

Progesterone

11. What is Implantation? (M-18)

The blastocyst embedded in the endometrium of the uterus.
OR
Attachment of blastocyst to the endometrium of the uterus.

12. What is Foetal ejection reflex? (M-18) (S-20)

The signals for parturition originate from the fully developed fetus and the placenta
which induce mild uterine contractions called foetal ejection reflex.

13. Name the hormone released by the ovary in the later phase of pregnancy. (J-18)
Relaxin

14. Name the layer of the uterus that exhibits strong contraction during parturition.
(M-19)
Myometrium exhibits strong contraction during delivery of the baby.

15. Name the finger like projections on Trophoblast that appear during implantation.
(J-19)
Chorionic villi

16. In which site of fallopian tube does fertilisation take place? (J-19)
Ampullary region of fallopian tube
OR
Ampullary junction of fallopian tube

TWO MARKS QUESTIONS

1. List any four hormones secreted by placenta. (M-15) (M-17)

1) human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
2) human placental lactogen (hPL)
3) Estrogens
4) Progestogens

2. Placenta is the structural and functional unit between foetus & maternal body.
Substantiate the statement. (J-15)
 It is an intimate connection established between chorionic villi and uterine tissue
and forms a structural and functional unit between the developing embryo and the
maternal body called Placenta
 Functions of placenta:
 Placenta provides oxygen to the developing embryo.
 Placenta provides nutrients to the developing embryo.
 Placenta removes CO2 and waste materials from the embryo.
 Placenta also secrete hormones i.e. human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG),
human placental lactogen (hPL), Estrogen, Progesterones required to
maintain pregnancy

3. Mention the accessory ducts of male reproductive system. (J-17) (M-20)

a) Rete testis
b) Vasa efferentia
c) Epididymis
d) Vas deferens.

2. What is spermatogenesis? Explain the process of spermatogenesis. (J-14)
Formation of Sperm from the spermatogonium is called as spermatogenesis.
It includes following phases
i. Multiplication phase:
 The wall of each seminiferous tubule consists
of two types of cells namely germinal
epithelium (gonial cells) and sertoli cells.
 Diploid germinal epithelium cell divides
repeatedly by mitosis to produce more number
of Spermatogonia.
 Diploid spermatogonia undergoes mitotic
division and increase its number inside the
seminiferous tubules
ii. Growth phase:
 Spermatogonia grow and increase in size and forms primary
spermatocytes having 46 chromosomes

iii. Maturation phase:

 Primary spermatocytes undergoes first meiotic division and forms two
equal haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes which have only 23
chromosomes each.
 Secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to
produce four equal haploid spermatids.
iv. Differentiation phase:
 The process of transformation of spermatids into sperms is called
spermiogenesis.
 Sperms head gets attached to Sertoli cells to draw nourishment and
finally released from seminiferous tubes.
 The process of release of sperms from seminiferous tubules is called
spermiation

phase of menstrual cycle. (2 marks) (M-19)

A) Spermatogeneis Shcematic representation

B) Follicular phase (Proliferative phase) :

 Secretion of LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary and the Estrogen
(ovarian hormone) causes regeneration of endometrium of the uterus.

days
