Main Purposes of the Job:

Birmingham Airport operates a “Safeguarding Office” and the responsibility resides with the
Airfield Operations Team where you will work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and
external stakeholders to comprehensively address aerodrome safeguarding regulation and
compliance matters.
Your communication skills will help you when working with Local Planning Authorities,
Government bodies, local businesses, construction organisations and developers. Aerodromes
(airports) are safeguarded to ensure that flight safety is not impacted upon by proposed
developments and activities associated with them. You will have excellent communication skills
with the ability to negotiate and represent the interests of Birmingham Airport.

Main Duties, Key Tasks:

Working closely with Air Traffic Control, Planning and Transport, Air Traffic Engineering, and
Airfield Operation departments you will help develop an operating framework shaped through
skilfully constructed policies, regulations, and standards.
This role encompasses a varied and challenging responsibility. With great scope for personal
development, the incumbent will energise a number of continuous improvement initiatives and
be integral to developing the existing aerodrome safeguarding framework.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities.

You will be enthusiastic to work collaboratively with the airport Safeguarding Office and industry
colleagues to develop your knowledge base to ensure Birmingham Airport safeguarding
remains compliant in the following areas:

• Protecting the airspace around the aerodrome


• Protecting the integrity of radar and other electronic aids to navigation
• Protecting aeronautical lighting
• Protecting the aerodrome from any increased wildlife strike risk
• Preventing any construction processes from interfering with aerodrome operations
• Protecting aircraft from the risk of collision with obstacles through appropriate lighting
Accomplished software and technical analysis abilities are required. You will be motivated to
develop higher standards. Working with members of the Safeguarding Office to provide
responses and assurance, your obligation includes progressing the role and management of
the database with oversight for safeguarding compliance.

Key Results/Objectives:

A comprehensive and structured program will be implemented to provide assurance of the


aerodrome regulatory requirements.

The Safeguarding Officer is integral part of the “Safeguarding Office” in responding to planning
applications and development on and around the airport. In addition to the “infrastructure and
operational changes” required in ensuring each is entered into the Centrik system database.

Tasks include, but are not limited to;


• On /off aerodrome assessments
• Survey requirements are met and Aeronautical Data Quality (ADQ)
• Cranes / Drones
• Assessment and Treatment of Obstacles
• Consultations
• 13km zone
• Windfarms
• Local land manager / business / planning office relations
• Charts
• Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP)
• Instrument Flight Procedures (IFP’s)

Maintain a system of identifying, reporting and record keeping for non-compliances and
presenting these to the HoAO and your line manager.

• Centrik oversight and administration
• SharePoint compliance data
• Asset management (CMMS)
