Timing chain: removal/installation

Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:
Always renew the timing chain
If the timing chain is to be re-used, mark the running direction before removal
Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
Always use new gaskets
Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the engine oil
Note: The engine must be cold
Drain the coolant. From radiator.

Remove the right-hand front wheel

Remove the right wheel arch liner

Remove the inlet manifold

Remove the ignition coils
Remove the spark plugs
Remove the valve cover
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Drive belt layout (With air conditioning)

Remove the coolant pump pulley

Use a trolley jack to support the engine
Remove the right-hand engine mount

Remove the right-hand engine mounting bracket

Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1

Note: Turn the engine clockwise
Align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and timing cover

Check the position of the camshafts

If the position is incorrect, turn the crankshaft 360° clockwise

Loosen the crankshaft pulley centre bolt
Remove the crankshaft pulley. Use a special tool.

Remove the lower oil sump

Remove the valve timing control solenoid valves
Remove the ancillary drive belt tensioner
Remove the timing cover. Clean off the old sealant.

Remove and discard the crankshaft oil seal

Caution! Do not damage the cover
Compress the tensioner
Lock the chain tensioner with a locking pin

Remove the chain tensioner

Remove the chain guide
Remove the chain tensioner guide
Remove the timing chain

Oil pump chain:

Compress the tensioner
Fit the tensioner locking pin (A)

Remove the oil pump chain tensioner

Loosen the oil pump gearwheel
Note: Use a wrench to counterhold
Remove the crankshaft gearwheel
Remove the oil pump gearwheel
Remove the oil pump chain
Installation
Refit the crankshaft gearwheel
The crankshaft woodruff key should be at the 12 o'clock position
Refit the oil pump chain together with the gearwheel
Tighten the bolts by hand
Align the coloured chain link with the marks on the gearwheels

Tighten the oil pump gearwheel

Refit the oil pump chain tensioner
Remove the tensioner locking pin
Check the marks again
Fit the timing chain
Align the marks on the timing chain with the marks on the gearwheel

Refit the chain tensioner guide

Refit the chain guide
Refit the chain tensioner
Remove the tensioner locking pin
Check the timing marks again
Refit the crankshaft front radial seal
Refit the timing cover. Apply sealant (3.4 - 4.4 mm).

Note: The cover must be fitted within 5 minutes of applying the sealant
Refit the crankshaft pulley

Further refitting is in the reverse order of removal

Refill the engine oil
Engine sump, including filter 4.4 (l)
Refill the cooling system
Cooling system (With heater) 6.8 (l)
Cooling system (Without heater) 6.3 (l)
Reconnect the battery earth cable
Torque settings
Engine oil drain plug
Engine oil drain plug (Renew the washer) 34.3 (Nm)
Wheel nuts
Wheel nuts 113 (Nm)
Valve cover
Valve cover
Stage 1 1.96 (Nm)
Stage 2 8.33 (Nm)
Inlet manifold
Inlet manifold 27 (Nm)
Spark plugs
Spark plugs 19.6 (Nm)
Crankshaft pulley
Crankshaft pulley
Stage 1 29.4 (Nm)
Stage 2 60 (°)
