Mathematics 6, page 264

Example:
A basket of fruits has bananas and mangoes. The bananas are 3 times
ot

the number of mangoes. There are 20 fruits in all. How many of each kind of
fruits are there in the basket?
Solution:
N

Let n = number of mangoes

3n = number of bananas
Since there are 20 fruits in all, then n + 3n = 20.
Solving the equation yields,
n + 3n = 20
4n = 20 Add like terms: n + 3n = 4n
n = 20 ÷4
Reverse the operation. Divide.
n=5

Learning Materials are for nonprofit educational purposes which are exclusively used for
Schools Division of Digos City only. Copies are not for sale.

4
Check the result:
Number of mangoes = n = 5
Number of bananas = 3n = 3(5) = 15
Total number of fruits = 5 + 15 = 20
Therefore, there are 5 mangoes and 15 bananas in the basket.
