WHAT IS METAL ?

• A solid material which is typically hard,

shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile,
with good electrical and thermal
conductivity (e.g. iron, gold, silver, and
aluminium, and alloys such as steel).
• Broken stone for use in making roads.
1. PROPERTIES OF METAL :

1. Physical Properties : Metals are hard,

non-adhesive, Cold and smooth, they are
very often shiny and strong. They are
also ductile and malleable, do not break
easily. Metals are good conductors of
electricity, sound and heat. When
temperature rises they expand, and when
it falls they always contract. They can
easily be welded to other metals.
2. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES : Metals react with
oxygen in air and water. Its known as
oxidation or rusting and it’s a reddish-
yellowish brown flaky coating of iron oxide
that is formed on iron or steel, especially
in the presence of moisture.

3. ECOLOGICAL PROPERTIES : Most metals are

recyclable and some metals such as lead or
mercury are toxic and they are a danger for
human beings and environment.
EXTRACTION OF METALS
Some common steps involved in the extraction of
metals from their ores are :
(i) Crushing and pulverization
(ii) Concentration or dressing of the ore
(iii) Calcination or roasting of the ore
(iv) Reduction of metal oxides to free metal
(v) Purification and refining of metal.
TYPES OF METALS :
Metals are classified mainly in 3 types
1. Ferrous Metal
2. Non Ferrous Metal
3. Alloys
FERROUS METAL -
A ferrous metal is any metal
that is primarily composed of
iron and has magnetic properties
. A ferrous metal is known for
its hardness , durability and
tensile strength. Some common
ferrous metals include :
• Alloy steel
• Carbon steel
• Cast iron
• Wrought iron
NON FERROUS METALS -
• Non ferrous metals are which do
not contain iron as their main
constituent.
• Non ferrous metals are non
magnetic
• Low weight
• High conductivity
• More resistant to corrosion
ALLOYS -

An alloy is a admixture of
metals, or a metal combined
with one or more other
elements . For example ,
combining the metallic
elements gold and copper
produces red gold , gold and
silver becomes white gold, and
silver combined with copper
produces sterling silver
APPLICATIONS OF METALS IN INTERIORS

Metal panels have a warm, strong, interesting

appearance. With the correct use of color, forming,
stamping and texture, metal panels provide a look that no
other material can achieve." Interior metals can be used
as a space divider to bisect a large open area when
the whole space is not required.
1. Metal is versatile and is adaptable to any type of commercial and
private space. The varying forms of metals ( i.e.: polished
brass, bight copper, shimmering aluminum, painted metals) offers
endless interior design ideas.
2. Aesthetically, metal brings in new trends and bodes well with any
style. It brings solidity to a space and often, livens up an
otherwise boring and uninspired area.
3. Durability – Metal is set to withstand the normal wear and tear
better than other materials. Metals are guaranteed to have a life
span of more than 40 years. To further promote durability, a
protective coating can be applied when use as an interior
lining.Ants and termites can damage wood but certainly not
metals.
4. Hygienic and safe – Hospitals and kitchens worldwide have used
metal for this reason. They are easy to maintain and kept clean.
5. Metal is green – Metal is fully recyclable, without losing its
performance quality. Perforated metal can contribute to reducing
wasted energy, as it promotes air flow. It can also function as
exterior shades to filter natural light into a building, shifting
sunlight to keep the interior cooler
ALUMINIUM -
• Aluminium has a dull silver
finish , making it similar
in appearance to stainless
steel, it is lighter in
weight and more affordable
than steel but it is’nt as
strong as steel , while
aluminium doesn’t rust, it
does oxidise – creating a
chalky white residue.
Aluminium is most often
used in outdoor furniture
and tends to work best with
cool colors
STAINLESS STEEL-
An allow of carbon , iron , chromium
and other metals . Stainless steel
is found in furniture and fixtures
throughout the home – from accent
tables to kitchen sinks . Because
of the chromium, it has corrosion
resistence – it doesn’t rust,
oxidise or corrode and is low
maintenance material. Stainless
steel is versatile works
particularly well with cool tones,
but it can also fit in with warm
tones
COPPER -
• Using copper is a great way
to add warmth to a white or
natural kitchen or bathroom
. Copper is reddish orange
in color and is found on
all types of décor and
fixtures, such as lighting
and sinks. It is resistant
to corrosion and is
antimicrobial. Copper on
high quality cookware
because of its superior
heat conductivity.
PROS AND CONS OF USING METALS IN
INTERIORS :
Procs –
• Durable
• Great for outdoor
furniture
• Safe
• Environmental
friendly
• Low maintenance
• Pest resistance
• Space smart
• Affordable
cons –
• weight
• Absorbs heat
• It is not suitable for all kind
of floors
