Hi there this is Prof. Tolibas

Thank you for your valuable effort of
answering the pre-test. I hope that you have
the idea on what are the things you need to
learn from this topic. It is then advice to you to
read comprehensively the content of this Unit
so as it will help you to do the series of
activities and will help also to be prepared for
the assessment.

What Are Different Types of Artists?

There are many different kinds of artists, and each uses a
different medium to express themselves. They often bring their
particular style and point of view to the works they produce. Some
examples of artists are painters, photographers, sculptors,
calligraphers, illustrators, printmakers, and graphic designers. They
may produce art as a hobby for their personal use, or they may be
hired to work as a professional artist. Some artists focus on a
specific medium or style, but art tends to be a fluid form of expression, so many artists
cross over into different forms of art. For instance, a painter might exclusively create
paintings or incorporate sculpting into their craft.

What Is an Artist?
An artist produces creative works in the form of painting, photography, sculpture,
drawing, performance, mixed media, or other art forms. They utilize their talents to
create work in a way that is unique to them, using a personal creative process to
complete their project. They may focus on one specific medium or may combine multiple
forms of art. For example, a sculptor uses their hands, tools, or a wheel to mold clay into
a work of art. Once the piece is dry, the sculptor may paint the piece before it is baked in
a kiln. Sketch artists may use pencil, chalk, charcoal, or other writing utensils to draw
realistic or abstract images. Artists may create artwork for personal satisfaction or as a
paid professional.

Which Industries Commonly Employ Artists?

Artists find employment in a wide variety of industries; some examples include
secondary and postsecondary education, entertainment, marketing, public relations,
manufacturing, and interior design. Each industry makes use of an artist’s talents in
different ways that are unique to company needs. For example, marketing relies on an
artist’s eye for what looks good in print, while interior design relies on an artist’s
experience with using patterns, textures, and colors in unique combinations. Movie
studios use artists to produce the visuals they need to promote their latest film release.
Artists who wish to teach others their craft may move into education and teach at a high
school or college.

How Do You Become a Professional Artist?

Becoming a professional artist is a process that takes shape differently for every
artist. Your first step to becoming a professional artist could be to complete a degree
program. Some earn an associate or bachelor's degree in visual arts, fine arts, or a
related field. You may also choose to develop your craft informally. Producing a catalog
of artwork is crucial; create works of art to cultivate your craft and compile a portfolio.
You should always be continuing to learn and develop your skills, keeping up with
current trends and best practices. You may also find it helpful to seek membership in a
trade association for support and networking.

How Do You Find Freelance Employment as an Artist?

To become a freelance artist, you must first cultivate your craft and develop a
technique that makes you stand out from other artists in the job market. Build a
substantial portfolio by generating many works of art that showcase your talent. Use a
variety of mediums to show your range of ability. For decorative art, cultivate
relationships with art galleries and other organizations that showcase artwork from local
artists to find venues to display your artwork. Visual artists in other industries such as
graphic designers and illustrators should network with different companies that utilize
freelance artists to find job opportunities (ZipRecruiter, n.d.).

Why local artists are so important?

Having a love of art is something most people can relate to. There are definitely
certain types of art that appeal more to one person than another but the general idea
isn’t a foreign concept. Many people enjoy the works visual artists create and appreciate
the work it takes to make a truly magnificent piece of artwork.
The harder part of being an art lover is finding ways to support artists in your
local community. Depending on your level of interest in owning artwork for your own
private collection you may not be aware of the ways you can support your local art
community. Sometimes it can feel like buying a painting is the only way and that’s not
always something everyone feels is accessible to them.

Why Do Local Artists Matter So Much?

Artists are some of the most passionate people you’ll ever meet. They are the
people that want to make your community proud. Their work is deeply personal to them
and they want to make sure it matters when it’s done. Artists in your local community are
going to be the ones using their artwork to affect change in your area the most.
Local artists are the ones who are teaching your children about art in school.
They’re the ones spending time working with patients in healthcare settings using art
therapy to help a patient recover from all kinds of things. They’re the artists that inspire
your local businesses to think outside of the box for ways to increase their profits.
Local artists matter because your community does better with them around. If
artists didn’t put their heart into their community you would be lacking a lot of things you
currently love about where you live. They matter because they care and they want to
continue making things better in your area.

How Can You Support Your Local Artists?

Supporting your local artists doesn’t have to be a complicated or financially out of
reach effort. There are plenty of things you can do to make a difference in your local art
community even if you don’t want to collect art for yourself yet. Finding ways that work
for you is the key to making sure your support matters.
How you choose to help your local community is a personal decision but there
are some ideas you can use that might have a bigger effect than you think. Sometimes it
just takes a minute to think about how even things that seem too small to matter really
do have an effect.

To support your local artists you can do things like:

Sharing Their Work On Social Media:

Social media is where a lot of artists rely on getting word of mouth style
advertising more than they ever have before. If you see art in your area that you love
don’t hesitate to share it online. Tell people where it’s at in your town and who created
the artwork you currently love.
You can also follow your local artists on their social media pages. If they share
an image you love, feel free to share that post with your friends. It’s another way to use
the same general idea to support your local artists. Social media is extremely powerful
when you use it well, and supporting your local art community is a great way to use it
very well.

Going To Local Events:

These events can be anything from a gallery showing to a vendor style fair. The
point is just to make sure you’re present for the events you’re interested in. Events that
aren’t well attended may not be repeated ever again, so it really does make a difference
to just be there. If you feel like you want to buy something that’s great but just being at
the event makes a bigger difference than you might currently realize.

Shopping Locally For Art First:

If you do have a need arise where you want to buy some art, like decorating a
new home, think about your local community before hopping online to shop instead. A lot
of local artists would love the chance to create something for you specifically or show
you their work and see what you love.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget about local communities when shopping online is
so convenient and readily available at your fingertips. Instead of logging on right away,
think about what artwork you’ve seen around town. Your favorite pieces of artwork
around your community can guide you to which artists you should look to first.
If you don’t have a favorite local artist that’s fine too. Think about asking some
local galleries or shops that sell artwork for ideas on local artists that would suit your
style. Just the mindset of thinking locally first can really change your approach to where
you go for art purchases in the future (Nelson, 2020).

Leo Marquiala - artist from Dipolog
Leo Jesus D. Marquiala, an artist from Dipolog City
By Art Tibaldo

I have known Leo Marquiala back in the late

70s during our college days. We were both enrolled
at the University of Santo Tomas College of
Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA) taking up BFA
major in Painting. Yup, this writer is a painter and
so with Leo who always referred to us as “Bai”, a
Cebuano or Visayan way of calling a friend. At a
time when original Levi jeans was a rare
commodity in the country, Leo always wears his
imported but faded blue denim because his place in
Dipolog, part of Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao
is one of the trading backdoors of smuggled goods.
For several months, Leo and I stayed in a boy’s
dormitory near UST often contented with three
pieces of small “pandesal”, a melted chunk of
butter and coffee for breakfast as part of our
monthly rent.

If not for his penchant for drawing and visual

arts, I would say that Leo could be better off as a
musician because he plays the guitar too well that
he can even make it cry just like George Harrison’s
“While my Guitar Gently Weeps”. Around 1977 to
1978, I was probably too “baduy” or laid back with
my type of music like John Denver’s “Take Me
Home Country Road” when he influenced me with
Rock ‘n Roll and the songs of the Beatles. To Leo,
John Lennon appeared to be the greatest musician
that ever lived like the Michelangelo of music.
Sources:
https://www.facebook.com/media/ Though we missed him during the time we
set/? received our diplomas, I learned years later that he
set=a.2235521069851935&type=3 further explored the art circuits in the Ermita area
and had alliances with the Mabini artists like the
late Tony Ko, fellow UST alumnus. There was also
a time when Leo visited me in the mid-80s when he
traveled up north with his sister who was then with
the academe and had connections with the Cariños
of Baguio.
More than three decades after our student
days, I was reunited with Leo this time in his home
town when my wife and I flew to Dipolog City as
wedding sponsors to our foster son Argie Lubon, a
junior officer of the Philippine Coast Guard.
Over lunch, Helen listens as two old buddies
reminisce old times. Since time permitted me to
see his place before the wedding, we dropped my
wife to our hotel so she can prepare for the
wedding as we motored to Leo’s place.
Luckily, we chartered a car for twelve hours and we
followed Leo in his motorbike towards his place not
too far away from the city proper. At a glance, his
place resembles a typical rural homestead with
trees abounding the surroundings but as you move
closer to its front door, you are greeted by painted
crossbars that accentuates the façade.

Entering his house from either front or

backdoor is an art experience as you see a mix of
painted boards, panels and canvasses. It is evident
that most of Leo’s work depicts the distinct culture
and customary practices of the Mindanao people in
various art styles. Though there is a touch of
modernism in the way Leo renders most of his
paintings, his old style with a touch of Post-
Impressionism and Fauvism is very much
revealing. Though I am not an expert in classifying
and identifying art-forms, Leo’s art style I believe is
very much his own as he use indigenous materials
to do his art pieces and fuses styles from different
cultures.

Belonging to the Samal Tribe of Sicayab,

Dipolog City as briefed in one of his online
promotions, Leo also perform ethnic music that
when I asked him to pose for me with his guitar, he
instead came out dressed with his ethnic attire with
a “Kuchapi” or “Kudyapi”, a type of guitar played by
indigenous people of Mindanao.

Our travel to Dipolog purposely for a family

affair became more memorable and worth the waits
and flight delays. Our side trip to the shrine of Dr.
Jose Rizal in Talisay, Dapitan is begging for
another narrative worth uploading in my next story.
Till we meet again Bai Leo.
