Specialised Cells
Starter This is a picture of a bacteria cell
• Write the date, title and all 3 LO’s.
• Answer these in your book:
Identify structures A, C and D.
Comment on what differences you notice
compared to animal and plant cells
B is called a ‘flagella’. Suggest the function
of a flagella.

• Not all animals and plants are the same – everything

differs in some way.
• The same applies to cells – they are not all the same
• Some cells in plants and animals are specialised.
• This means their structures are adapted to suit a
particular function – so they often don’t look like
typical animal or plant cells

Muscle Cells
• Muscle cells are found in all the muscles in our body
e.g., arms, legs, everywhere!
• Muscles are made from long elastic fibres of
protein. They are packed with mitochondria.
• This is because muscles are required for movement
and mitochondria is where energy is released from
respiration.

Sperm Cell
• Sperm cells are designed to fertilise
eggs
• Found in the testes Head contains enzymes & nucleus

• A sperm is small and has a long tail

to allow it to swim to the egg
• The head of the sperm contains
enzymes which allow it to digest the
egg and join with it Tail

Egg Cell Cytoplasm

membrane

• Egg cells are designed to be

fertilized by the sperm
• Found in the ovaries
• Contains a large food store for the
new cell that is being formed

Ciliated Cell Nucleus

• These line all of the air passages in
the lungs
• They have tiny hairs called cilia
• These hairs sweep the mucus with
trapped dust and bacteria back up
the throat

Red Blood Cell

• Designed to carry oxygen around
the body
• Found in the blood
• Large surface area (due to having
no nucleus) to allow it to carry more
oxygen

Palisade Cell Nucleus

• Palisade cells are designed for
photosynthesis
• They’re found in the top of the leaf
• They have a large surface area to
absorb water and minerals
• They are packed with chloroplasts
to help the plant make glucose
through photosynthesis
