Introduction

I am of the opinion that the growth in technology has helped in the facilitation of deepening

globalization and in effect weakened the existence of the nation-state but it has also come with

better communication, and improved markets around the world, which has been facilitated by the

development of better technology better logistics. I fully agree because, with technology and the

digital environment, the power of social media is becoming bigger by day, but also would like to

expound on how without technology globalization would not be where it is.

Impacts of Technology on Globalisation and Impacts on Nation-state.

Technological globalization is defined as the increase of speed in diffusing technology. It means

the spreading of technology around the world in particular the developed countries. The impact

of big tech has compelled business enterprises to become global by increasing the economies and

markets of different companies all over the world including the developing nations. The increase

in technology has helped reduce the costs of transport and communication across the globe and

as a result, facilitates the global sourcing of raw products and other materials. This in turn has

helped the nation-state to be facilitated with products and commodities, which will make work

easier for general populations (Chouhan, May 2015). I specifically mention developing countries

because earlier on, very high technology production was limited to only fully developed nations

with high resources. Technology is now easily transferable to the third world nations where

technology products can be accessed with average or even low incomes.

Technology has helped in globalization majorly by helping speed up businesses, goods, people,

images, and different opinions around the world. By way of increased technology, transportation,

and, communication, flows have become faster. In simple terms, this is the quickening of actions

that used to take longer to finish before the invention of technology. The best example is the mail

system which could take several months to reach its intended destination, and now takes minutes.

This has made the life of the nation-state very easy in terms of communication.

My final explanation of the benefits of technology in globalization and its relevance to the

nation-state would be that it has helped in the interdependency of the global and local landscape

in that, while everybody might go on with their lives, the local actions can be seen anywhere in

the world. As explained by (Nazli, October 2019), this means that any actions taken locally have

an impact on the global space.

In the introduction, I said that as much as I very much settle that technological change has

developed globalization and damaged the relevance of the nation-state, there are a few

drawbacks to it. It has created a low-wage structure with companies all over the world now

searching for cheap labor because in some industries you will get a low pay for a job that would

otherwise be a well-paying one. This has created a high rate of unemployment in the nation-state

with some portion of the population opting for alternatives. Another impact of big tech is that it

has created a big gap between the rich and the poor. The ones who are able to afford are the

individuals who have the money and unfortunately, the ones who cannot afford or are poor

cannot get the full benefits of the always-advancing technology (Lawlor, April 2008).

The major drawback of technology in globalization which majorly affects the nation-state, in the

end, is the cultural aspect of it. Ideologies are not the only risks of technology in globalization.

There is the risk of losing culture and another potential is the censoring by governments that let

in or allow the masses to know only the information that should be known. Criminals globally

are circumventing local laws against bad vices like child pornography, sex trade, and gambling.

Illegal and illicit information is being exchanged globally and this is shaking the moral core of

the nation-state (Tammam, 2013). Unfortunately, technology is not able to create a system of

proof of age to control the dangerous criminals from exploiting little children and accessing

information illegally. The use of technology has been a cause of concern on some platforms and

there have been suggestions before to come up with control measures to reduce crimes led by

technology.
5

Conclusion.

With technology, there have been very many benefits that have changed how governments and

businesses are managed and generally how we live and think. This has had a major impact on

operations in the last few years and has affected the cultural way of living and led to new

adaptations. We have seen that technology speeds up economic and cultural globalization and it

is a vital piece instrument that if well used will also minimize the very negative vices that it

comes with. With technology advancing daily, we hope that the culprits who undermine

technology and use it negatively will be caught up.
