Student Name Ethan Rogers

Task 1 of 3:
Introduction: write the script that you will be recording for your introduction here. Introduce yourself
and say what the documentary will be about. Maybe make a statement that you are going to challenge or
ask a question that you’re going to try and answer through the course of the documentary and in the
conclusion.

HI, I don’t know how to start a documentary so I’m just going to say the entire purpose of the documentary
here and now, in my opinion A characters design should reflect the themes of the narrative and I’m going to
use this mute, pot breaking “hero” as an example.

So why Link? well he has quite the history of games, how many? Too many to cover in ten minutes so I’m
going to look at two designs that I have specifically chosen that have a drastically different tone in narrative.

Task 2 of 3:
Script:
(script being narrated/additional sounds heard. Write ROUGH timings in here where possible)

However, one of these games has had an amazing impact and still be regarded as one of the best legend of
Zelda games ever made today however, I'm not talking about what ocarina of time I'm talking about its
darker and more standalone brother, Majora's mask.

The story of the development of Majora's mask is a wild ride as after developing ocarina of time the game
director Shigeru Miyamoto wanted to remake ocarina of time however his lead dungeon designer, didn’t
want to do that so he secretly made new dungeon designs and the n told his game director that he wanted
to make a new game and so Shigeru Miyamoto challenge him to make a game within a year this is the result
of that years amount of work and it is incredible. However, he did help get help from his game director
which supplied him with reused assets and game art for a reduction of the production time in addition to a
time traveling game mechanic suggested by Yoshiaki Koizumi so they could use the same levels but when
you replay, he said levels you discover more secrets after rewind's.

So how about the story, well after the events of ocarina of time, you (link is sent back in time to relive his
lost childhood) however within this timeline he is wondering through the forest when he encounters a mask
wearing skull kid and skull kid steal links ocarina and turns him into a pea shooter, while the deku scrub
situation is absolved you also learn that a GIANT DEMON MOON WILL CRASH AND OBLITORATE THE WORLD
in THREE DAYS, have fun buddy.

So, what does links design do you to support this story

So firstly, I will be looking at the silhouette and shape language, within this there is a combination of a
rectangular and triangular motif, this can connotate that This link is fast experience and deadly the triangle
motif is mostly, defined within his hair, ears and his tunic skirt.
However, with the combination of a rectangular Motif it connotates, stability and strength, this is signalled
by his torso Arms and boots, these can further accentuate his silhouette to make it more defined and
recognisable, however, there is still a fantasy theme but for a more mature and darker story.

Links Majoras mask design is composed of four colours excluding shading, Green, yellow, brown and red
And with this it connotates that link in this game is Reliable, good natured, Energetic, determined and a
positive force within the story and that point is specifically shown within his design as green is the dominant
colour allowing the connotation of green to excel while not getting muddled by the supporting colours.

As for his exaggeration ,his shadows very pronounced restricting the use of any softer practice of shading,
this further extenuates the darker and more mature story was being told within the game and you can feel
all of this just because the shadows are exaggerated, however this exaggeration is not carried out into the
in-game model however this is saved by the way other characters and how they behave within the story and
how they behave so the previous stated illustration does not lose its meaning.

So just for fun I will propose a question, what if I wanted to make a character that will fit within this type of
story, you will be able to do this by following the same principals done within the existing materials, so here
will have to use earthy tones, harsh shadows while having a dark fantasy approach and it will look something
like this, his name is Greg

Personally I think its design definitely helps the tone and the themes of the story as his sharper design
almost connotates a more adult story as overarching theme of the story is how people confront the end of
everything and his design reflects this more mature and darker story but still having a little bit of that hope
and more Mr cool theme of wonder and curiosity As is more fantasy like designs support the time travelling
game mechanic where it will take you multiple resets to figure out new secrets and ways of exploring.

But it is kind of depressing looking at this very existential and stress inducing story so I’m favouring some
more light-hearted something li-
The production of Legend of Zelda Wind Waker was a bit of a difficult one to say the least since every game
after ocarina of time was not succeeding up to that standard and so Nintendo was trying to catch the quality
up back to that standard and so midway through developing majora's mask they started a new project that
was also going to take a more realistic approach to the Zelda formula however when the dungeon designer,
Eiji Aonuma came back from Developing majora's mask he was unhappy with the current state of the
project, however one of the art designers had do they cartoon style of link and so this one drawing started
the production of Legend of Zelda Wind Waker however one was initially released two of controversy due to
its cell shaded and light hearted art style however later down line people have regarded this eventually as a
quite respectable game within the franchise.

As for the story it's mainly follows you having to rescue your sister after she was captured fire giant bird
hired by Gannon and then after you save her, you're going to have to kill Gannon coz he wants to rule the
world again being helped by a talking ship and a pirate crew the captain of which being Princess Zelda
technically.

So, a little bit less in depth in the previous game but more light-hearted and quite charming in some places
actually like how the beginning of the game it actually holds up a mirror itself and realise that it's not going
to be the next ocarina of time just like how the character of link at the beginning isn't happy about having to
wear the same costume that previous links wore.

The shape language is probably the most drastic change within this design as with a lack of sharp edges and
any triangular motif they decide to opt into a rectangular and circular motif with a softer face showing that
he is kind and caring with his mostly rectangular stature showing that he is possibly stubborn and self-
reliability. Additionally having a more cartoonish style will allow a more clear silhouette as having a big head
with giant identifiable shapes aka his hat and hair will definitely make him more recognisable within a
vacuum and so these design decisions have had a positive effect on his recognisability.

As for his colour palette it was more of a pastell style showing the more subtle green showing that he is a
sign of safety and overall, good natured however they did decide to bring back the supporting yellow colour
which also can say that he is spry, energetic and happy, however there has been also the addition of white
trousers and this catchy connotate an innocent and moist a cleanliness of his demeanour and attitude. along
the characters more saturated colour palette it will allow for it to accentuate the more positive and uplifting
tones within the story they will also be able to hold a contrast to the villain’s design that has more of a
darker colour palette.

Finally is exaggeration and I feel but this has had the biggest impact on his character design as they decide to
go from a more realistic exaggeration of adventurer to a cartoonish exaggeration of a kid adventurer
however the art to game here is executed amazingly as his game box art pretty much is exactly replicated
within the game world and it doesn't hold any uncanny valley like he doesn't look too old at all he just looks
like a little kid adventurer looking for some fun.

And so I will present the same question, what if I wanted to make greg within this type of story, you will be
able to do this by examine the changes done to link and do the same to greg resulting in this, he’s adorable

Overall, through the backlash and controversy the game originally got from its launch I still believe that the
character design soes not diminish the admittedly good game that it eventually got recognised for how ever
the subsequent games to “correct” this mistake would turn out to be mediocre.

Task 3 of 3:
Conclusion: write the script that you will be recording for your conclusion here. revisit your initial
question or statement from the introduction, recap some highlights of the things you’ve studied for your
question/statement and suggest whether the statement is supported or what the answer to the question
was.

So should a character’s design reflect the themes and tone within a narrative? of course it's a bit of a no
brainer because when you see the main character it will be the first impression of what type of tone the
narrative will be as if swapped the character designs with both games, it will diminish the experience.
