iv
What I Need to Know
This module is designed to make every learner aware of the different vital
organs, their functions, and how they work together to perform actions that are
important for us to live and continue life.

Lesson
The heart and the lungs work together to ensure our body is getting enough
oxygen and nutrients to make it function well. Each may have separate functions
such as, the heart pumps the blood that carries oxygen and nutrient; the lungs
supply and clean oxygen to the blood that is pumped by the heart.

every food in the table?
4
What’s New
Arrange the letters to form words. Match to the organ on the right side. Write your
answers on a clean sheet of paper.
5
What is It
The activity that you have done has something to do with our lesson for today.
What do you feel, do you get tired? Heartbeat and pulse rate increase after doing an
exercise. Heart and lungs are doubling their job when you do tiring activities. To maintain
the balance in our body, the heart, and lungs function double time. That is to ensure we are
receiving enough oxygen all throughout our body.
The major organ for circulation is the heart. It is a muscular organ about the size of
a fist, located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. The beating of the heart is a
result of the contraction of the heart muscle.
The lungs are pairs of spongy tissue responsible for breathing. It is the lungs which
supply oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide in our body. These are the processes involved
in the so-called respiration.
The heart and lungs work together to ensure there is enough oxygen needed by the
body to make it function well. The right side of our heart picks up the deoxygenated blood
and pumped it to the lungs to get some oxygen. After the blood has obtained oxygen again,
the left side of the heart pumps it to the heart and to other parts of the body. Thus, the heart
and lungs needed each other so the body functions well. If one of the organs are injured or
unhealthy, obtaining oxygen and nutrients throughout the body would be affected.

Lesson
The organ that controls every single action in our body is the brain. It is
responsible for the actions that we do. It has something to do with how we act and
react to certain things or conditions. Without the brain, we may not be able to do
anything.
What’s In
Check the box if the statement shows the function of the heart and draw a star if it shows
the function of the lungs. Write your answers on a clean sheet of paper.
11
What’s New
Categorize the following. Write the word under the correct sense where it belongs.
Write your answers on a clean sheet of paper.
What is It
What strategy did you use to make the activity easily? What part of your body
makes you do your activity well aside from your hands that write? Do you know, our
brain is working in every activity that we are doing? Brain is a powerful organ, if it stops
working, we will be nothing. We can be considered dead because we cannot do anything.
Brain basically functions as the control center of the body. It controls our sense organs.
It controls our feelings and emotion. It controls our bones and muscles. It controls our
reaction. It controls voluntary actions; actions that you control such as walking, running,
eating, snapping of fingers, nodding and many others.
12
It also controls involuntary actions or the action that you cannot control or those
you never think of doing, such as blinking of your eyes, swallowing, breathing, salivation,
sneezing, defecation, hiccups, coughing, and many others. It helps maintain a person’s
balance. It connects the brain to the spinal cord. It controls activities like thinking, solving
problems, memorizing, and decision-making.

functioning.

you can smell it from the kitchen.
