Quarter 2 – Module 2:
Levels of Biological Organization
in an Organism
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science – Grade 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Levels
of Biological Organization in an Organism!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

ii
For the learner:

Welcome to the Science – Grade 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Levels
of Biological Organization in an Organism!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

Lesson Levels of Biological
1 Organization in an
Organism
There are distinctive materials in the environment. These are also diverse
kinds of living and non – living things.

In previous lesson, you have learned about the different parts and functions
of a microscope. The microscope is a precision instrument and the tool used by
scientist in studying minute living things and their parts. It is essential to study
living things. It will bring us to the world we live in. However, study of living things
is very broad and complex. Henceforth, to make it easier for you to study and
understand, it is distributed into different levels of organization.

This module will discuss the different levels of biological organization from the
smallest unit of life and work up to the largest category.

What is It

There are many levels of organization. Biologists vary in terms of the number
of levels they consider. In this module, you will learn the 12 levels of organization.
These levels will be presented from the simplest to the more complex level in a
hierarchy.
From the smallest to largest, the levels are: molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ
system, organism, population, community, ecosystem and biosphere.

1. Molecules - are made of atoms, the smallest unit of chemical elements. They
can be found in all living organism. Examples are H2O (water), N2 (Nitrogen
gas).

2. Cell – is the basic unit and building block of life. There are two kinds of cells.
Prokaryotic cells are ordinarily single-celled and smaller than eukaryotic cells.
Eukaryotic cells are usually found in multicellular organisms, but there are
few single-celled eukaryotes. Examples are human blood cells, plant and
animal cell.

3. Tissue – is made of cells that work together to perform a certain task.

Examples are human skin tissue, muscle tissue and connective tissue.

4. Organ – is made of similar tissues arranged and grouped together to perform

a specific function. Examples of organs are the brain and heart.

5. Organ System- is a group of organs that work together to perform specific

bodily functions. Examples are digestive system, circulatory system and other
system in our body.

6. Organism – is a recognizable, self – contained individual. Organisms can be

unicellular such as bacteria or amoeba, or multi – cellular composed of organs
and organ system. We humans are also an example of a multi – cellular
organism.

7. Population – is a group of organisms of the same species occupying a given

area. A colony of ants and herd of cows are examples of this.

8. Community – is composed of all the population of different species of

organisms living together in a given area. The population of lions in Kenya,
population of giraffes, people, species in a pond and all other species in that
area, add up to a community.

7
9. Ecosystem – is made up of all the communities in a certain area, as well as
all the non – living physical components of the environment.
Examples of this are rainforest, desert, grassland, swamp and others.

10. Biosphere – is simply defined as the place, area, and zone where the entire
life on Earth exists. The hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere, along with
all the above – mentioned levels, together constitute the biosphere.
