SECTION I
DIRECTED SITUATIONS
1. Write in SPANISH the information required for EACH of the situations given below.
Do NOT write more than ONE sentence for each situation. For some situations a
complete sentence may not be necessary. Do NOT translate the situations given. Do
NOT use abbreviations. DO NOT WRITE EACH ANSWER ON A DIFFERENT
PAGE.
(a) Write an email to your cousin in which you promise to do two things for
him/her.
(b) Your teacher is taking up a new job overseas. Write him/her a farewell note and
express your good wishes.
(c) Your friend is having a party next Sunday and seeks your assistance with the
preparations. Respond by email, indicating what you can do to assist and when.
(e) You received a poem from a friend. Write him/her an email giving two reasons
why you like the poem.
(f) Your parents did not allow you to go to an event. Send an email to your friend
telling him/her why you were not allowed and how you feel about it.
(g) You lost a book that you borrowed from your teacher. Write a note of apology
and state what you will do about the situation.
(h) You are desperately in need of help for the school concert. Write a message to
your best friend requesting assistance with an aspect of the concert.
(i) You have an item for sale and wish to inform your school mates about it. Write
the message you put on the school’s notice board, including the price.
(j) Your father will not be picking you up after school. Write the note he leaves on
your bedroom door explaining why.

SECTION II
LETTER/COMPOSITION
Use ONE of the following outlines as a guide to write EITHER a letter OR a composition in
SPANISH of NO MORE THAN 130–150 words. Use the tenses appropriate to the topic which
you have chosen.

2. LETTER
You attended a benefit concert at which a famous Caribbean artiste performed. Write a letter to
your best friend who lives in Argentina describing your experience. Be sure to include
(i) when the concert was held and the name of the artiste
(ii) a description of the mood or the atmosphere on the night of the concert
(iii) what you liked and/or disliked about the concert
(iv) how the proceeds from the concert will be used.
(Do NOT write your real name and address, but include the date in SPANISH and use
the appropriate beginning and ending.)

3. COMPOSITION
Write a composition for your Spanish class about a vacation you and your family went on during
which difficulties were encountered. Be sure to include
(i) when the vacation took place and where you went
(ii) what difficulties you encountered
(iii) how these difficulties were resolved
(iv) what you and your family will do to ensure that these difficulties do not recur.
Total 30 marks
SECTION III
EITHER
4. CONTEXTUAL ANNOUNCEMENT
A vacancy exists in your father’s business and your father has asked you to write an announcement
for the community newspaper.
Responses to ALL of the cues listed below MUST be included in the announcement.
(i) The name of the business and the post being advertised
(ii) Academic qualifications required for the job
(iii) Desired qualities expected in the persons responding
(iv) Deadline date for submission of application
(v) Contact details Total 20 marks

5. CONTEXTUAL DIALOGUE
Use 80–100 words in the INSERT provided to complete the dialogue between you and
your uncle Manuel, by giving your responses.
You and your uncle Manuel are making arrangements to host some of your friends who are visiting
you at your home in Costa Rica.
Responses to ALL of the cues listed below MUST be included in the dialogue.
(i) Greetings
(ii) Information about your friends
(iii) An activity you plan to organize for them
(iv) A difficulty you encounter in hosting them
(v) An expression of gratitude to your uncle
Complete the dialogue in the insert provided. The insert should then be attached to your
answer booklet.

READING COMPREHENSION
6. Read the following selection carefully. Do NOT translate, but answer the questions
in ENGLISH.
A Wake Up Call
El señor Rojas es un fuerte fumador y gasta casi todo su salario en cigarrillos. Le gusta
cuando sus parientes del extranjero vienen a visitarle porque le traen regalos y sobretodo
cigarrillos. Su esposa se queja y dice que en la casa todo huele a humo: la ropa, los muebles
y hasta el cabello de todos. Está harta de oírle decir cada año nuevo que va a dejar de fumar.
Este año, el Sr Rojas dejó de fumar en casa para hacerle creer a su esposa que ya no fumaba
más. Sin embargo, una tarde cuando conducía su carro fumando, extendió la mano para
echar la colilla del cigarrillo. El viento sopló y le devolvió la colilla al carro. Sintió que la
colilla le quemó la espalda y perdió el control del carro. ¡Casi tuvo un accidente!
El señor Rojas seguramente aprendió más de una lección ese día. Miró a su esposa y dijo:
- He recibido una llamada de alerta: ¡Acabo de fumar mi último cigarrillo!
