INSTRUCTIONS

The passage should be read at a normal pace, the fïrst and last (complete) readings each
taking approximately l% minutes. The reading should be done in such a way as to convey
changes of voice (in dialogueo for example), but explanatory gestures are not permissible. The

ri title in English is to be read to the candidates.

Listen carefully to the following instructions:

I shall read the passage straight through once. Listen carefully while I read.

I shall then instruct you to look at the questions in English on the text. Three minutes will
be allowed for you to read the questions and make notes. There are two groups of questions.

I shall read the passage again,but this time in two parts. When I have finished reading Part
A (but not before) you will be given 5 minutes in which to select your answers for the first group of
questions. You must select the BEST answer and shade the corresponding letter on the answer
sheet provided. This procedure will then be repeated for Part B.

I shall then read the passage a third time, straight through, after which you will be
allowed 4 minutes for final revision.

PART A

Todos los viernes, Paco iba a visitar aIa anciana que vivía cerca del río en una casa pequeña y
modesta. Le gustaba escuchar todos los cuentos de su vida como enfermera en la ciudad. Ese viemes, cuando
se acercó a la casa de laanciana,notó que la luz del patio estaba apagada. - ¡Qué extraño! - pensó. Normalmente
ella prendía laluz delpati.o a las seis de lafarde. Comenzó a preocuparse porque recordó que ella no se sentía
muy bien el viemes pasado.

Llam6 alapaerta como de costumbre - ¡Señora Rivera, Señora Rivera! Ninguna respuesta. Miró por
la ventana y en la sala vio una figura que se movió rápidamente en la oscuridad. Se asustó. ¡Dios Mío!
¡Debe de ser un ladrón! - pensó. Rápidamente fue a la comisaría y les convenció de ir a la casita de la
señora River a. Lapolicíaforzó la puerta y entraron en la vivienda. Cuando encendieron lahtz, vieron en la sala
a la señora Rivera y a los amigos de Paco con una torta de cumpleaños. Estaban listos para darle una sorpresa
a Paco pero fueron ellos quienes recibieron la sorpresa.
