SECTION I

DIRECTED SITUATIONS

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.

Write in SPANISH the information required for EACH of the situations given below.
Do NOT write more than ONE sentence for each situation. For some situations, a complete
sentence may NOT be necessary. Do NOT translate the situations given. Do NOT use
abbreviations. DO NOT WRITE EACH ANSWER ON A DIFFERENT PAGE.

CANDIDATES WILL BE PENALISED FOR DISREGARDING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

1. Your friend asked you the answer to a question during class. Unfortunately, it turned out
to be the wrong answer. Write a note of apology which you pass to him/her.

2. You are inviting a friend to your birthday party. Write the invitation giving details of the
date and venue.

3. Your classmate sends you an email expressing his/her opinion about an important
matter. Write the email you send expressing your agreement with him/her.

4. You return home to find a note in which your mother has given you permission to attend
an event in exchange for something. What does the note say?

5. A telephone call comes for your brother who is not at home. Write the note that you leave
informing him about the call.

6. Your sister who is studying abroad is undecided about her future plans and seeks your
advice. Write an email advising her what she should do.

7. You have forgotten an important item at home and would like your father to bring it to
you at school. Send a text message to him requesting his assistance.

8. Your parents have gone out for the day and have left a note reminding you and your
brother of something that both of you should not do. What does the note say?

9. Your teacher informs you that the School Board intends to ban cellular phones in school.
Write a note expressing why you disagree with this measure.

10. The editor of the school newspaper is requesting contributions for the next issue. Write
to the editor stating what you are willing to contribute.

LETTER/COMPOSITION

Using ONE of the following outlines as a guide, write in SPANISH a letter OR composition
ofNO MORE THAN 130- 150 words. Use the tense or tenses appropriate to the topic which
you have chosen.

Your Spanish pen pal is planning to visit you during the Christmas holidays. Write a letter
informing him/her of

(i) how you could be identified at the airport


(ii) the weather in your country at that time of the year
(iii) some interesting places you will visit with himlher and why
(iv) one reason you are excited about his/her visit.

(Do NOT write your real name and address, but include the date in Spanish and use the
appropriate beginning and ending.)

OR
COMPOSITION

You have to write a composition in Spanish to win a prize which is a trip to a special destination
of your choice. You must include

(i) where you want to go and why


(ii) how you will spend your time there
(iii) how you found out about the destination
(iv) why you think you should be selected to go.

Use the following information to write an announcement of about 80 - 100 words in


SPANISH.

You are the president of the Green Club at school which seeks to develop an environmentally
conscious attitude among the students in your school, their parents and the society at large. Write
the announcement you will print for distribution at school.

Responses to ALL the cues indicated below MUST be included in the announcement.
(i) The name and purpose of the club
(ii) Why everybody should join
(iii) Tasks to be done in the first activity of the year
(iv) Invite everybody to the activity and give date, time and place
(v) Contact information

Using 80-100 words in the INSERT provided, complete the dialogue between you and your
relative, giving your responses.
You have travelled to Chile with the Spanish Club. Only three days have passed but you are already
homesick, a bit cold and you need to get in touch with your family to let them know how you are
doing. You call horne to speak with your closest relative.

Responses to ALL of the cues listed below MUST be included in the completed dialogue.
(i) Greetings and salutations
(ii) Enquiries about everyone
(iii) Your real reason(s) for calling
(iv) An up-to-date description of your activities in Chile

Mariela's Experience
A Mariela le gusta viajar a otros pafses, pero le aterra viajar en avi6n. A su familia le parece muy
extraiio que alguien que tiene tanto miedo de volar, viaje tan a menudo. En esta ocasi6n, su clase
iba a pasar cinco dfas en Panama y Mariela pensaba que era una buena oportunidad para visitar
el pafs, practicar el idioma y mejorar su conocimiento de la cultura Panameiia. Asf, decidi6 ir
con los otros cincuenta estudiantes de su clase.
El avi6n de la compaiifa ENRUTA se demor6 tres horas porque los trabajadores del aeropuerto
en Panama estaban en huelga. Al fin lleg6 y todos los estudiantes muy entusiasmados
comenzaron a gritar.
En el avi6n, Mariela se sent6 con dos compaiieras de clase. Sinti6 un miedo inexplicable y
durante todo el vuelo mantuvo los ojos cerrados porque no querfa ver afuera. Subitamente hubo
mucha turbulencia y la pobre muchacha grit6 hasta *enronquecer. Los otros pasajeros no pod fan
comprender por que la muchacha estaba tan espantada ya que estaba acostumbrada a viajar y
la turbulencia era algo normal. Para Mariela, sin embargo, la turbulencia parecfa interminable
y como siempre, exclam6:
i Nunca mas viaj are en avi6n!
