New technology increases nutritional value of

feed additives
Perstorp Franklin, a major supplier of organic acid-based feed additives, has recently introduced a
wide range of products based on a new buffering technology that secures the safety and greater
nutritional value of feed additives for the feed industry. The new technology effectively outdates the
current widespread use of ammonium, which fails to add any nutritional value to feed formulations.

The feed industry depends on organic acid-based products to counteract the growth of microorganisms such
as bacteria, yeast and moulds and to control the pH levels in feed. The new products from Perstorp Franklin
meet these demands and benefit from the recently developed buffering technology that results in products in
which both anion and cation offer more nutritional value than competitive products.

“Efficacy studies conducted at independent institutes indicate that our new buffering technology is an
improvement on the current standard and all the available data gives us a high level of confidence in our new
products,” says Perstorp Henri Peijnenburg.

The current use of ammonium for the buffering of organic acids is widely spread in the industry but the
ammonium process fails to add any nutritional value to feed formulations. Therefore Perstorp Franklin
chooses to now use a different cation to buffer the organic acids.

The extra nutritional value of Perstorp Franklin’s organic acid-based products also offers the industry an
excellent base for development of an alternative feeding strategy, in the wake of the ban on antibiotic growth
promoters. The new feed additives allow feed formulators to improve feed quality and are expected to
improve conditions for animal husbandry.

Tests show that these new feed additives are effective against the growth of microorganisms such as E. coli
and Salmonella, while the buffering process ensures that the products are completely safe and user-friendly.
Greater legislation and consumer involvement regarding the use of feed additives makes it more important
than ever to ensure the safety of these products.

“As a key producer of organic acids, our philosophy is to always be up front with the application of organic
acids in the feed industry. We are very pleased that our research and development work has resulted in a
line of products that meets the developing needs of this industry,” says Peijnenburg.
