Question:

We wish to produce a 0.3-in. thick plate of 3105 aluminum having a

tensile strength of at least 25,000 psi and a % elongation of at least
5%. The original thickness of the plate is 3 in. The maximum cold
work in each step is 80%. Describe the cold working and annealing
steps required to make this product. Compare this process with what
you would recommend if you could do the initial deformation by
hot working. (See Figure.)

Answer :

Consider the graph 8.25, “The effect of percent cold work on the
properties of a 3105 aluminum alloy†and obtain the
corresponding cold work percent for the given properties as follows:

Obtain the range of cold work needed to obtain the required plate thickness as
follows:

From the graph, it is clear that for a tensile strength of , the

minimum corresponding percent of cold work is 42% which is .

But, if considering the percentage elongation of , the corresponding percent

cold work is 25% which is .

Since there is no exact value of the percentage cold work for the required
properties, take the 30% of cold work by satisfying the minimum 5% elongation at
the final stage of the process.

Calculate the original thickness of the specimen prior to the final operation by using
the following relation:

Here, is the thickness of the specimen prior to cold working and is the final
thickness, and %CW is cold work.

Substitute 30% for %CW and 0.3 in. for .

Write the steps for cold work or anneal treatment as follows:

1)

Cold work the piece up to 75% from 3 in. and obtain the final thickness as follows:

Substitute 75% for %CW and 3 in. for .

Hence the thickness obtained after a percentage cold work of 75% is 0.75 in.

2)

Cold work the piece up to a percent to obtain the final thickness of 0.429 in. from
0.75 in. as follows:

Substitute for and 0.75 in. for .

Hence cold work the piece up to percent of 42.8%, to obtain the thickness of
0.429in.

3)

Cold work the piece up to a percent to obtain the final thickness of 0.3 in. from
0.429 in. as follows:

Substitute for and 0.3 in. for .

Hence cold work the piece up to percent of 30%, to obtain the final thickness of 0.3
in.

Hence the steps for cold work or anneal treatment to reduce the thickness of plate
from 3 in. to 0.3 in. include the following:

1. Cold work the piece up to a percent of 75%, to reduce the thickness from 3 in. to
0.75 in.

2. Now cold work the piece up to a percent of 42.8%, to reduce the thickness from
0.75 in. to 0.429 in.

3. Then cold work the piece up to a percent of 30%, to reduce the thickness from
0.429 in. to a final required thickness of 0.3 in.

Compare the cold work treatment with hot work treatment as follows:

Write the steps for cold work or anneal treatment as follows:

1)

In hot work treatment, directly hot work the piece to reduce the thickness from 3.0
in. to 0.429 in. as follows:

Substitute for and 3 in. for .

Hence hot work the piece up to percent of 85.7%, to obtain the thickness of 0.429
in.

2)

Now cold work the piece up to a percent to obtain the final thickness of 0.3 in. from
0.429 in. as follows:

Substitute for and 0.3 in. for .

Hence cold work the piece up to percent of 30%, to obtain the final thickness of 0.3
in.

Hence the steps for hot work treatment to reduce the thickness of plate from 3 in. to
0.3 in. include the following:

1. Hot work the piece directly up to percent of 85.7%, to obtain the thickness of
0.429 in. from 3 in.

2. Then cold work the piece up to a percent of 30%, to reduce the thickness from
0.429 in. to 0.3 in.
