How much is a premium tax credit?

It all depends on your income and what your state allows. It is reconciled on your tax return
so be sure you get your 1095 A form from your state before you file. The IRS will hold your
refund until they get it. Of course, this credit is pertinent to health care premiums through
your state's Marketplace.

The flip side is an Excess Premium Tax Credit. Be sure to let your state know if your income
changes. If you get too much credit for your health care premium, you'll have to pay it back.

There is no donation tax credit. A person can deduct a certain amount of charitable contributions
from their taxable income, but that isn’t a tax credit. A tax credit would reduce taxes dollar for
dollar. Donations can reduce taxable income in some cases (up to $300 in contributions to
qualified charities in 2020, any amount that exceeds the standard deduction in other years,
subject to the 60% AGI limit).
