CHILDREN &
LITERACY

MISS PUVANA
DEFINITION OF LITERACY
It is widely accepted that literacy generally is simply defined as “the
ability to read and write”. Some attempts have been undertaken to
classify people who are literate and people who are illiterate based on
this definition. Researchers, however, find it impossible (Elley, 1989) to do
this task as “there is no precise dividing line between a person who is
fully literate and one who is not” (OECD, 2003, p.17).
EMERGENT LITERACY
Emergent literacy encompasses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that
a child develops in relation to reading and writing throughout the early
childhood period, starting at birth and before the onset of conventional
reading and writing instruction (usually at school entry). Emergent
literacy includes such aspects as oral language (both speaking and
listening), understanding that print can carry meaning, as well as basic
alphabet knowledge, and early phonological awareness.
BLENDED LITERACY
Blended literacy refers to the intentional integration of high-quality,
content-rich literacy curriculum and instruction designed to build
students’ word and world knowledge with blended learning, utilizing
technology with intention to tailor learning experiences to students’
individual literacy needs in order to deepen learning and advance
achievement.
