CH-13, FUN WITH MAGNETS

Q.No.1: - A tailor is stitching a

button on his shirt, the needle
has slipped from his hand to
the floor. How can he find the
needle?
Ans:- The tailor can find the
needle by using a magnet
because needle will stick to
the magnet as it made up of
iron or steel which are
magnetic materials.
Q.No 2:- How is a compass
used to find directions?
Ans:- A compass has a
magnetic needle which is
suspended freely and it comes
to rest in the north-south
direction. So, we can find out
all the directions with the help
of a compass.
Q.No.3:- Write any four
properties of a magnet.
Ans:- Four properties of a
magnet are:-
a) A Magnet attracts objects
made of iron, nickel and
cobalt towards it.
b) Each magnet has two
magnetic poles – North
and South.
c) A freely suspended
magnet always aligns in
the north-south direction.
d) Opposite poles attract
each other whereas similar
poles repel one another.
Q.No.4:- What will happen
when you bring
opposite/unlike poles of two
magnets close to each other ?
Ans:- They will attract each
other.
Q.No.5:- What will happen
when you bring similar/like
poles of two magnets close to
each other ?
Ans:- They will repel one
another.
Q.No.6:- Name the device
which is used to find
directions.
Ans:- Compass
Q.No.7:- Which property of a
magnet is the basis of making
a compass ?
Ans:- A freely suspended
magnet always aligns in the
north-south direction.
Q.No.8:- Name three magnetic
materials found in nature.
Ans:- Three magnetic
materials found in nature are:-
a) Iron
b) Cobalt
c) Nickel
Q.No.9:- How many poles
does a magnet have? Name
the poles in a magnet.
Ans:- A magnet has two
poles.
The poles in a magnet are:-
a) North pole
b) South pole
Q.No.10:- You have two
identical bars, one is a magnet
and the other one is iron. How
will you identify which one is
an iron bar and which one is a
magnet?
Ans:- We can bring another
object made of iron close to
both the bars. The bar which
will attract the iron object is a
magnet while the other one is
just an iron bar.
OR
Take both the rods and
suspend them separately.
Bring one end of a bar magnet
close to both the ends of the
suspended rod. If it shows
attraction at both the ends
then it is an iron rod. If it
shows attraction at one end
and repulsion at the other end
then it is a bar magnet.
Q.No.11:- In which direction
does a freely suspended
magnet always align ?
Ans:- A freely suspended
magnet always aligns in the
north-south direction.
Q.No.12:- In which direction
does a freely suspended
magnet come to rest ?
Ans:- North-South direction.
Q.No.13:- Where are the poles
of a bar magnet located ?
Ans:- Poles of a bar magnet
are located near the two ends
of it.
Q.No.14:- Can we have an
isolated north or south pole ?
Ans:- No… They always exist in
pairs.
Q. No.15:- Spread some iron
filings on a sheet of paper.
Now, place a bar magnet on
this sheet. Which part of the
magnet do none or only a few
iron filings stick?
Ans:- Middle part of the
magnet sticks almost none or
only a few iron filings.
