FUN WITH MAGNETS

 ANSWER THE GIVEN QUESTIONS

Q1) Differentiate between:

Magnetic Materials Non- Magnetic Materials
1 They are the materials which get They are the materials which are not
attracted towards a magnet. attracted towards a magnet.

2 Example: Things made of iron ,nickel & Example: Plastic , rubber , glass ,wood etc.
cobalt.

Q2) What is meant by –Poles of a magnet ?

Ans. A magnet has two poles-The North Pole & The South Pole. They are located at the two
ends of a magnet. The poles of a magnet have the maximum magnetic force .These two poles
always exist in pairs.

Q3) What is a magnetic compass ?

Ans. A magnetic compass is a device which is used to find directions at a particular place. It
is a circular dial shaped object which has directions marked on it(For example - North ,
South , East & West). It has a magnetic needle which can rotate freely & indicates the North-
South direction when it comes to rest.To identify the north pole of magnetic needle , it is
usually painted in different colour.

Q4) How is compass used to find directions ?

Ans. The needle of the compass indicates the North – South direction when it comes to rest.
By knowing North-South direction, one can always find out East-West directions.

Q5) How can you make a magnet using an iron strip ?

Ans. Touch & Stroke method can be used to make an iron strip into a magnet. Take a bar
magnet & place one of its poles near one edge of the bar of iron.Without lifting the bar
magnet ,move it along the length of the iron bar till you reach the other end .Now , lift the
magnet and bring the pole(the same pole you started with) to the same point of the iron bar
from which you began. On repeating this process 40-50 times the iron strip becomes a
magnet.(Remember that the pole of the magnet & the direction of its movement should not
change.)

Q6) What is a magnetic keeper ?

Ans. A magnetic keeper is a piece of soft iron. In keepers , two magnets are arranged with
their opposite poles lying side by side.A piece of wood should be kept between them & two
pieces of soft iron (keepers) should be placed across the poles.

Q7) What will happen if a magnet is brought near a compass ?

Ans. If a magnet is brought near a compass , the south pole of the compass is attracted
towards the north pole of a magnet & north pole of the compass is attracted towards the
south pole of a magnet.
Q8) What are magnets ?
Ans. Magnets are the objects which attract things made of iron , nickel and cobalt .

Q9) What are the common shapes of a magnet ?

Ans. Some common shapes of a magnet are : Bar shaped , Horse –shoe magnet , cylindrical
OR ball ended magnet.

Q10) Explain the properties of a magnet .

Ans. The properties are :
a.Every magnet has two poles . The two poles of a magnet cannot exist independently.
They always exist in pairs and cannot be separated.
b. Like poles of a magnet repel each other and unlike poles of a magnet attract each other.
c. A freely suspended magnet always comes to rest in North-South direction.

Q11) Write any four uses of a magnet .

Ans. The uses are :
a. They are used in scrapyards to separate iron from a junk of waste material.
b. They are used to hold objects(like stickers , refrigerator doors etc.)
c. ATM cards/Credit cards have magnetic strip with information stored in them.
d. Magnets are used in hair dryers , loudspeakers , generators and various type of toys.

Q12) How is a magnet demagnetized ?

Ans. A magnet can be demagnetized :
a. By heating
b. By hammering the magnet violently.
c. By dropping the magnet from a height.

Q13) If a horse wears a horse-shoe magnet , what will happen to the magnet ?
Ans. If a horse wears a horse – shoe magnet , it will get demagnetized due to continuous
striking against land.

Q14) Which rock was found in Greece that had magnetic properties ?
Ans. Magnetite

Q15) It was observed that a pencil sharpener gets attracted by both the poles of a magnet
although its body is made of plastic . Name a material that might have been used to
make some part of it.
Ans. In a pencil sharpener , blade is made of iron and when it comes in contact with magnet ,
Iron is attracted by magnet.
Q16) Complete the table by writing – REPULSION or ATTRACTION.
S.NO MAGNET A MAGNET B OBSERVATION
1 N – POLE N-POLE REPULSION
2 S - POLE N-POLE ATTRACTION
3 N- POLE S-POLE ATTRACTION
4 S- POLE S-POLE REPULSION
