b) A and R both are true and Ris not correct explanation for assertion.

c) A is false but R is true statement.

d) A and R is true statement.

Ans: d) A is false statement but R is true.

(3) • Assertion – Opposite pole of two magnets attract each other where as similar pole
repel one another.

a) A and R both are true and R is correct explanation for assertion.
b) A and R both are true and Ris not correct explanation for assertion.
c) A is true but R is false statement.

d) A and R is true statement.

A

III) HOTS

1) You are given two rods. Out of these, one is an iron rod and the other one is a magnet, how
will you identify these rods?

Ans: When we take two rod in contact with another iron or metal, the magnet
attract iron particle but iron rod doesn't attract.

2) A tailor was stitching button on his shirt. the needle has slipped from his hand on to
the floor .can you help the tailor to find the needle?

Ans: A magnet can be used to find the needle.

3) A bar magnet is cut into two pieces, A and B, from the middle, as shown in figure
13.8 .
Will the two pieces act as individual magnets? Mark the poles of these two pieces.
Suggest an activity to verify your answer.

Ans: Yes,thetwo broken pieces ,A and B ,will act as individual

magnets.Amagnet will always have two poles-the North pole and South
pole.Hence, now each piece will have two poles.

By using the test of repulsion between the newly formed magnets, we can
detect the poles of broken magnets.

IV) SHORTANSWERS

1) What are soft and hard magnetic materials?

Ans:Soft iron is called soft magnetic material because it loses its

magnetism easily. Soft iron is used in making electromagnets.

Steel is called a ‘hard’ magnetic material because it does not lose its
magnetism so easily. It is used to make permanent magnets.

2) Are both poles of a magnet similar?

Ans: No, the two poles of a magnet are not similar (alike). Both have
different tendency. The pole that points towards the north is called
north-pole while the pole pointing always towards the south is called
south-pole.
3) saheli and her friends were decorating the class bulletin board. She dropped the box
of stainless steel pins by mistake. She tried to collect the pins using a magnet. She could
not succeed. What could be the reason for this?

Ans: The pins are made of stainless steel, which is a non-magnetic

material. Hence saheli was unsuccessful in collecting the pins using a
magnet.

4) When do two magnets attract each other?

Ans: Two magnets attract each other when their unlike (opposite) poles
come close to each other.

5) Expansion of MRI ,explain?

Ans: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical diagnostic

technique which uses the magnetic field inside the body for obtaining
images of different parts of the body.

V) BRIEF ANSWER

1) Three identical iron bars are kept on a table. Two out of three bars are magnets. In
one of the magnets, the North-South poles are marked. How will you find out which of
the other two bars is a magnet? Identify the poles of this magnet.

Ans: The magnet on which the North-South poles are marked can be used
to find the magnet out of two bars.

Take the magnet with North-South poles marked, and keep it close to
both the iron bars; hence both magnets get attracted to it since both are
magnets.

To find out the poles of an unknown magnet, we can use the repulsion
test. The north pole marked on the given magnet will repel the north pole
of the unknown magnet and vice-versa.

2) What is the directive property of a magnet?

1) Ans: 1)A magnet's directive property describes its proclivity to align
itself along an external magnetic field.

2)When a magnet is suspended in the air by a thread, it directs itself to

align in the geographic north-south direction. This property of the magnet
is known as the target's directive property.
