III)HOT QUESTIONS
1.How does water kept under shade of tree also gets
evaporated?
Air around us gets heated from sunlight. This warm air
provides heat for evaporation of water kept in a shade.
2. Why do some water pipes burst in winter season?

During winter season, water freezes and expand which

increases more pressure in the pipe. Due to this high pressure,
water pipes burst.

3.What is hail ? How is hail formed?

Hail is a form of frozen precipitation that falls as hailstones.

Hail forms as rain droplets, move higher in a cloud, and freeze

in very cold temperatures.

IV)SHORT ANSWERS

1. Evaporation occurs at all temperatures. Then why do we

hang our clothes to dry in the sun?

The rate of evaporation depends on the temperature of the

surroundings. Clothes that are hung for drying in the sun
experience warmer temperature and thus dry faster.

2. Take out a cooled bottle of water from the refrigerator and

keep it on a table. After some time, you notice droplets of water
around it. Why?
This is because the surface of the air around the bottle cools
down and air condenses around the bottle.

3. Does digestion of food need the presence of water?

Yes, the digestion of food depends on the presence of water.

Moreover, water is also required for the absorption of digested
food.

4. Which evaporates faster−hot water or cold water?

Hot water evaporates faster than cold water. The rate of

evaporation depends upon the temperature. Higher the
temperature, faster the water evaporates.

5.What are the two types of rainwater harvesting?

Two types of rainwater harvesting are.

(a) Collecting water from where it falls.

Example: Collecting water from the rooftops of the houses or

buildings (Roof water harvesting).

(b) Collecting flowing rainwater.

Example: Collecting rainwater by constructing ponds with

bund.

V) BRIEF ANSWERS

1. Why the dams are constructed? Why flood gates are opened during heavy rain?

A dam holds water for later use, irrigation, navigation,

hydroelectricity, flood control, fishing, and recreation.

When the water behind a dam reaches the capacity of the dam,
water must be released the prevent damage to the dam.
Sometimes extremely large amounts of water needs to be
released during large rain events.
2. Write five ways to conserve water.

 Water is a precious gift of nature.

 We should not waste it. Try to ‘save every drop of water’.
 Always be careful that water tank in your house does not
overflow when it is being filled.
 If we leave the tap running while brushing our teeth, nearly
16 litres of water get wasted. We should fill a mug of
water and use that instead.
 We should not water our garden by drinking water instead
we have to reuse the water from washing clothes and
cleaning utensils.
