Introduction
You have learned in your previous lesson how force affects the size, shape and movement of objects.
As you apply force, changes take place because of the energy in the exerted force.
Have you seen a magnet? What can you say about it?
Magnets have invisible magnetic field which attracts objects made of iron and nickel. One end of a
bar magnet is the north pole, and the opposite is the south pole. They are attracted to the three types of
metals. These metals are made of nickel, iron and cobalt. There are several types of magnets like ring
magnets, rectangular magnets and bar magnets.
The most basic law of magnetism is that like poles repel one
another and unlike poles attract each other. You will better
experience the law of magnetism if you lay two bar magnets in a line
and place the north pole of one magnet next to the south pole of
the other magnet, you will feel the poles pushing toward each
other.
Magnets have two poles, the North and South poles. The poles are on both ends of a bar and horseshoe
magnets. The magnetic force of a magnet is strongest at the poles and weakest at the middle part. Have you
seen how magnets behave or interact when placed near each other?
When magnets are placed so that the poles facing each other are different, say North and South or South
and North, the two magnets attract each other. We say that unlike poles attract each other.
However, when two like poles of magnets are placed facing each other, say, North and North; or South and
South, the magnets push each other. They don’t attract. We say that like poles repel.
Learning Task 1: Direction: Study the pics below and answer the questions that follow.
3. Which of the following statement explains the magnetic field lines in figure C?
A. Magnetic force around two poles pulls away from each other
A. North pole B. South pole C. North and South pole D. It cannot be determined
a. Based from the activity given, how will you describe the magnetic force exerted by magnet to another
magnet?
c. What happen when magnets with the same poles put together?
Assimilation
Learning Task 3
_____3. All objects that are made up of iron are attracted to magnets
_____4. Two unlike poles of a magnet when put near each other pull apart.
_____5. When the north pole of a magnet is placed near the north pole of another magnet,
electromagnetic force tends to pull each other together
Assessment

B. Complete the Statement below. Choose your answer inside the box.
When the __________ of the two magnets are put near each other, they have a force that will
either pull them together or push them apart. If the poles are _____________ , then they will pull together,
or attract each other. If the poles are the ___________ , then they will push apart, or __________ each
other. The push and pull of a magnet is called magnetism. Magnets showing the north and south poles
attracting ______ objects.
