Lucas Test

Is a solution of Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Alcohols are soluble in Lucas'
reagent but the reaction product chloro alkanes are not so it separates from the reaction mixture as a
separate layer. It is a chlorinating agent replacing the hydroxyl group in alcohols by a chlorine atom. The
reaction with Lucas' reagent provides a convenient test for telling primary, secondary, and tertiary
alcohols apart.
