1.

Who are the characters in the story and give each a short
description?

- The monkey and turtle are the story's major characters. The greedy
monkey portrays the opportunistic, cunning members of society that are
eager to gain more for themselves and maintain their position at the top.
The Turtle, on the other hand, is smart and represents the warmth and
sincere trust that the Filipinos have.

2. What is the theme of the story and why?

- The theme of the story entitled ‘The monkey and the turtle’ is “The weak
but the cunning can be a lot stronger than the powerful. One shouldn’t be
daunted by the apparent strength of a stronger foe, and instead, use one’s
intellect and unity”

Why? Some articles claim that Spain dominated the Philippines from 1521
to 1989. All of the high-ranking administrators were Spaniards, and the
majority of them didn't care much for the Filipino people. The Spaniards
abused their power to rule and exploited Filipinos' vulnerabilities. This is
similar to the situation where the turtle's plant was too high for him to
reach, and the monkey took advantage when he went to grab the fruit and
ate the turtle's food.
