IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETIC NEUROPATHY, DOES REDUCING URIC ACID

ALTER THE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESSION OF DIABETIC PERIPHERAL

NEUROPATHY, IN COMPARISON TO PATIENTS WHO HAVE DIABETIC

NEUROPATHY WITH HIGH LEVELS OF SERUM URIC ACID THAT IS LEFT

UNTREATED?

Outline

 Abstract

 Background

Uric acid's significance in the progression of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is

unknown. The purpose of this research was to look at serum uric acid levels in those

who had or didn't have diabetic neuropathy (DPN).

 Material & Method

Forty-two individuals with DPN (case group) and 42 individuals without DPN

(control group) were compared in terms of age, religion, body mass index (BMI), and

illness period. DPN was diagnosed using nerve conductivity investigations on the

sural, peroneal, and tibial nerves in the legs and feet.

 Results

In these 2 categories, serum uric acid was assessed. The average age of the

participants in the case group was 54.7 years, whereas it was 55.9 years in the control

condition . Only the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer was greater in individuals with

DPN. The mean blood uric acid level in diabetic individuals with DPN was 4.71

mg/dl compared to 4.37 mg/dl in individuals without DPN.

 Discussion

 Conclusion
The findings reveal that diabetic individuals with diabetic neuropathy have a higher

level of blood uric acid. Additional research is needed to identify the function of uric

acid in the occurrence and development of DPN.
