Baucis and Philemon
A Greek Myth

In Ancient Greece, Zeus is praised as the leader of all gods and men. One time, Zeus decided to test the generosity of mankind.
Generosity and kindness to others in need are important for Zeus, and he wanted to find out if humans still have these values in them. Zeus
traveled to a city called Phrygia. He disguised himself as an old beggar and begged for food in every house he can find. Zeus was truly
disappointed. The rich and the poor treated him in the same unacceptable way: he was not given any food at all and was even shouted, cursed
at, and threatened by them.
Zeus reached a small and humble house in the outskirts of Phrygia. He was welcomed by a woman named Baucis and her husband
Philemon. The house was more miserable inside and it became clear to Zeus that the couple are deprived even of the simple things in life.
Despite this, they did not hesitate to feed their guest. Zeus was delighted. Thus, every time Philemon poured milk for him, the pitcher refilled
instantly! The couple realized that they are in the presence of a divine being. They knelt and prayed for a long life together. Zeus departed
contentedly from Baucis and Philemon’s house. Generosity is not yet lost after all, he thought. The couple lived a long, healthy life together and
when they died, Zeus turned them into beautiful trees, standing side by side.
