AP Calculus AB – Major Summative 6: Implicit and Inverses Name: _____________________ Block: ____

This assessment is intended to be completed with access to course notes and other resources. It is critical that you show all work and
provide appropriate written explanations, as this is the only way to assess your knowledge of the subject. It is intended to be
completed in approximately 60-75 minutes, though there is no specific time limit. If you use a graphing aid, be sure to attach images
of the graphs you created as part of your answer. Index images/graph appropriately by labeling the question with which they are
associated. YOU ABSOLUTELY MAY NOT WORK WITH ANY OTHER STUDENT ON THIS ASSESSMENT!

1. The curve defined by 𝑥 3 𝑦 2 = 1 has two points such that 𝑥 = 1. By hand:

a. identify these ordered pairs.
b. find the equation of the tangent to this curve at each point listed above.
c. find the points on 𝑓(𝑥) = (2𝑥 − 1)2 that have a tangent line that is normal to either line listed above.

2. By hand, show that the point (0, −5) is a relative minimum of the relation 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 25. Use the Second Derivative Test.
Show all work, and justify your answer.

3. Using the table at the right, find the equation of the tangent to 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) at 𝑥 = 5. 𝒙 𝟐 𝟓
𝒇(𝒙) 5 6
𝒇′(𝒙) −1/4 −4
4. Given the diagram at the right:

a. Define the function 𝑦 both IMPLICITLY and EXPLICITLY.

𝑑𝑦
b. Find using a method described in class (simply providing the explicit
𝑑𝑥
definition of this inverse trigonometric derivative will earn no credit). 𝑥2
c. Find the equation of the tangent to 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) at 𝑥 = −1.
𝑦
d. Use the equation you found above to estimate 𝑦 = 𝑓(−1.02).

5. Given the function 𝑓(𝑥) shown below, find:

a. the equation of the tangent to 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) at 𝑥 = 2.
b. the equation of the tangent to 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) at 𝑥 = −3.
c. the intersection point of these two tangents.
