Week 3 - Day 1
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY
Formulate and solve accurately real-life problems involving continuity of functions.
(STEM_BC11LC-IIIc-1 & STEM_BC11LC-IIIc-2)
OBJECTIVES
 Illustrate continuity of a function at a number given a graph.
 determine whether a function is continuous at a number or not
WHAT I KNOW: Which of the following graph is a continuous graph?

WHAT’S IN
Evaluate the following:
1. lim 3 2. lim −4𝑥 2 3. lim 𝑥 3 + 7 4. lim 2𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 5. lim 6
𝑥→1 𝑥→1 𝑥→−2 𝑥→3 𝑥→2
6. lim 5𝑥 7. lim 6𝑥 3 + 2 8. lim −𝑥 3 − 4 9. lim 𝑥 10. lim √𝑥
𝑥→2 𝑥→2 𝑥→5 𝑥→−5 𝑥→16

WHAT’S NEW
 A function is said to be continuous at x=a if there is no interruption in the
graph of f(x) at a. Its graph is unbroken at a , and there is no hole, jump or gap.
 A function f is continuous at point c if:
1. f (c ) exists;
2. 𝒍𝒊𝒎 𝒇(𝒙) exists ; and
𝒙 →𝒄
3. 𝒍𝒊𝒎 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒄)
𝒙 →𝒄

WHAT IS IT
Example # 1:
Answer the following:
1. f(2) = __-2__
2.a. lim+ 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −𝟐
𝑥 →2
b lim− 𝑓(𝑥 ) = −𝟐
𝑥 →2
c lim 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = − 𝟐
𝑥 →2
3. compare the values of f(2) and the
lim 𝑓(𝑥 )
𝑥 →2
f(2) equals 𝒍𝒊𝒎 𝒇(𝒙)
𝒙 →𝟐

Therefore: The graph is continuous at x=2

WHAT’S MORE
Example # 2:
Answer the following:
1. f(-1) = __0__
2.a. lim + 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝟎
𝑥 →−1
b lim 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝟒
𝑥 →−1−
c lim 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑫𝑵𝑬
𝑥 →−1
3. compare the values of f(-1) and the
lim 𝑓(𝑥 )
𝑥 →−1
f(-1) is not equals 𝒍𝒊𝒎 𝒇(𝒙)
𝒙 →−𝟏

Therefore: The graph is discontinuous at x=-1

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Determine if the given graph is continuous or not given the following value of x using the three
conditions of continuity
1. x=-4 3.x = 2
2. x=-1 4. x= 4

b lim− 𝑓(𝑥) = _________
𝑥 →2
c lim 𝑓(𝑥) = ______________
𝑥 →2
3. compare the values of f(2) and the lim 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥 →2
