Lesson#1: Evaluating a Function
x 1 2 3 4
F(x) 50 100 150 200
Example:
The laborer earnings (y) corresponding to the number
of hours (x) he worked could be expressed by the
relation, y= f(x) ”read as y equals f of x”
where y denotes his earnings, in pesos, and x denotes
The number of hours of work. In this particular form y
is said to be the function of x. In other words, the
laborer’s earnings (y) depend on (x), the number of
hours that he works.
Evaluating the function
𝒙 -2 -1 1 2
𝑓(𝑥)
Evaluate f(x) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
1. f(-1) 2. f(1) 3. f(2)
Solution:
f(-1)=𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
=(−1)3 −4 −1 2 + 3 −1 + 10
= −1 − 4 1 − 3 + 10
= -1- 4 + 7
= -5 + 7
Answer: (-1, 2)
Application
Solution:
𝐴(𝑟) = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝐴(3) = 𝜋(3)2
𝐴 = (3.14)(3)2
𝐴 = 3.14 9
𝐴 = 28.26 𝑠𝑞. 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
Answer: 28.26 sq. unit
Application
Evaluate f(x) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
1. f(-3) 2. f(0) 3. f(0.5)
Evaluation
B. Identifies the two sets of quantities that are
related and the relation between them. Tell if the
relation is a function or not.
1. The cost of playing games in the Computer
House is a function of the length of time (t)
played. The rate is ₱10.00 per hour. Find C(t)
when t= 4
2. The area of a square is a function of the length of
its side. Find A(s) when s=3.
3. The circumference of a circle is a function of its
radius.Find C(r) when r=1
