Lesson#1: Evaluating a Function

Instruction: Give the domain and the range for each

set of ordered pairs.

Domain: { -1, -2, -3, -4 }; Range: {1, 2, 3, 4}

Review

Instruction: State whether the given set of ordered

is a function or not
1. { (0, 1), (2, 3), (4, 5), (6, 7) }
2. { (-1, 1), (-2, 2), (-3, 3), (-4, 4) }
3. { (1, 2), (0, 1), (1, 3), (2, 1) }
Instruction: State whether the given set of ordered
is a function or not. Then tell why it is not.

1. { (0, 1), (2, 3), (4, 5), (6, 7) }

2. { (-1, 1), (-2, 2), (-3, 3), (-4, 4) }
3. { (1, 2), (0, 1), (1, 3), (2, 1) }
1 and 2 is a function because each value of x is
paired with only one y. No single value of x is
paired with two or more values of y.
while 3 is not a function because the value of x is
paired with two values of y. (1,2) and (1,3).
Definition:
A variable y is said to be a function of a
second variable x. If a relation exists between them
in such a manner that for each value
of x, there corresponds one or more values of y.
If for each value of x, there corresponds only one
value of y, then y is said to be a single
valued function of x.
Functions and relations as a table of values

We can use the notation f(x) = y for each ordered

pair (x , y) in f. The function f can be presented by
table of values below.

x 1 2 3 4
F(x) 50 100 150 200
Example:
The laborer earnings (y) corresponding to the number
of hours (x) he worked could be expressed by the
relation, y= f(x) ”read as y equals f of x”
where y denotes his earnings, in pesos, and x denotes
The number of hours of work. In this particular form y
is said to be the function of x. In other words, the
laborer’s earnings (y) depend on (x), the number of
hours that he works.
Evaluating the function
𝒙 -2 -1 1 2
𝑓(𝑥)

Evaluate f(x) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −2

Solution:
f(-2) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
=−23 − 4 −2 2 + 3(−2) + 10
=−8 − 4 4 − 6 + 10
= (-8)+( -16)+( – 6) +(10)
= -30 + 10
= -20
Evaluating the function

Evaluate f(x) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −1

Solution:
f(-1) = 𝑥 3 −4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
=(−1)3 −4 −1 2 + 3(−1) + 10
=−1 − 4 1 − 3 + 10
= (-1) + (- 4) + ( -3) +10
= -8 +10
Answer: (-1, 2)
Fixing Skills

Evaluate f(x) =𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
1. f(-1) 2. f(1) 3. f(2)
Solution:
f(-1)=𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 10
=(−1)3 −4 −1 2 + 3 −1 + 10
= −1 − 4 1 − 3 + 10
= -1- 4 + 7
= -5 + 7
Answer: (-1, 2)
Application

1. Express the perimeter P, of a rectangle as a

function of its sides a and b. Compute the
perimeter when a =3 and b = 5.
2. Express the area A, of a circle as a function of
its radius, r. Find A(3).
3. Express the distance S, travelled by a car
travelling at a uniform rate of 80 kph, as a

Application
1. Express the perimeter P, of a rectangle as a
function of its sides a and b. Compute the
perimeter when a =3 and b = 5.
Solution:
𝑃(𝑎, 𝑏) = 2𝑎 + 2𝑏
𝑃 3,5 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑏
𝑃 = 2 3 + 2(5)
𝑃 = 6 + 10
𝑃 = 16
Answer = 16
Application
2. Express the area A, of a circle as a function of
its radius, r. Find A(3). (Hint : 𝜋 = 3.14)
appriximate.

Solution:
𝐴(𝑟) = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝐴(3) = 𝜋(3)2
𝐴 = (3.14)(3)2
𝐴 = 3.14 9
𝐴 = 28.26 𝑠𝑞. 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
Answer: 28.26 sq. unit
Application

3. Express the distance D, travelled by a car

travelling at a uniform rate of 80 kph, as a
function of the time, t in minutes. Find D(45).
Solution:
𝐷(𝑡) = 80 𝑘𝑝ℎ • 𝑡
𝐷 45𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 80 𝑘𝑚/ℎ(45𝑚𝑖𝑛)
𝐷 = 3600 𝑘𝑚
Answer: 3,600 km
Processing

1. What is the notation for the function?

2. How do we evaluate function?
3. Explain the statement” All functions are
relation but not all relations are function”.
Generalization

If f(x) denotes a certain function of x, then f(a)

denotes the value of f(x) when x=a. The value of
the function is found by substituting the value a
for x in the expression, f(x). The process of
performing the indicated operations after
substituting the assigned value of each
independent variable in a functional relation is
called evaluating a function.
