Namak Haram was a heartfelt movie, depicting aspects of Male friendship, love towards
people, importance of connections which are not bloodly but meant so much and altogether
dealt with the overall scenario of the labors, the management and the trade unions.
As the movie continues wanted to brief it out – Vikram (Amitabh Bachchan) and Chander
(Rajesh Khanna) have been close friends since childhood, and also had a worthy connection
with Chander’s family. One fine day, Vikram had to go to visit his father, as he was ill and
had to stay and manage until he could take control. In all this Vikram had an argument with
the leader of the TU that disturbed him. Both of them made a plot to take the right
conventional revenge, but this-lead to a major change in their life’s as by-passing time he
could feel the pain of the employees being a part of them, staying there, eating and making
friends and getting treated as family. After even after their plan succeed, the traces very left
and visible. There was a bit of variance in the behavior but these outer circumstances
couldn’t withstand their bond. Vikram’s father wanted Chander to die because after
acquiring the leaders position the management had suffered a huge loss. The end seemed
as if Vikram lost his best friend and also took revenge from his father by taking all the blame
on himself which hurts the most.
Namak Haram – was a movie with social issues, the insider’s view, the actual scenario
going to and fro and relationship of the people and the management with the insights of
the trade union and its perspectives according to the writer Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

THE CHARACTERSTICS, which I found in the movie were:

1)Trade unions think their main task is to oppose-To oppose here is like not been satisfied
with every and any decision made by the management. Taking Karim’s case, he had his
hands cut in the machine, Chander opposed the decision of giving 2000 rupees as
compensation to him underlying the fact that it has to be same for every worker in the
factory and this has to be predetermined asper the rule and policies.
2nd – on the account of Founder’s Day, a bonus used to be given to all the employees,
and as soon as they heard that bonus this year is cancelled because the company’s profit
rates are not high without even thinking and ignoring their leader everyone became ready
to oppose which purely shows that a middle way is not even thought of, its either this side
or the other.
3rd-After the reality of Chander, as Somu came out he was called off from the job he
had which was again a reason for their 33 days long strike.

2) The trade unions were poorly organized I feel in structure, the film had no one below
the main leader to occupy when necessary and also Chander very easily made his place in
the hearts of the people by helping them in a couple of matters which kept Bipin Lal (The
previous union leader) his works and position withstand. This also showed that the union
was not strong enough. There was no sense of thankfulness among the people with his
leader. Even the employees itself who made Chander the competitor of Bipin Lal in the next
election.
3)Disagreement over the scope and process- the people just reacted violently within
seconds of hearing an issue and even after continuous explaining the workers did what they
felt was right, and not with the process of discussion and coming up to a solution to the
problem legally.
In the management it had a divide and rule policy as well.
4) Centralized bargaining process- from the time Chander became the Trade Union’s leader
the system had a bit of improvement I feel, scenes were not so much regarding this point
but as per my understanding of the film, things went smoothly as he was working very hard
in negotiating for the rights of the employees. There was a scene when Vikram was
convincing his friend to come back to normal and start living normally as they were he
explained him about the hardships and the cruel reality of the workers situation by
mentioning the rates of day-to-day essentials and wages they get.
5) The employees were highly organized- we could know this by the only meeting scene in
the entire movie before their longest strike, that is everyone okay with the strike as the
prices were high that tie and no work with no money. There was a dialogue where Rajesh
Khanna shooted as “Jis din ek mazdoor kaam pe nhi jaata uske ghar par chula nhi balki uska
pet jalta h.” Everyone had a consent before the announcement of the strike. It was just one
person called off from the job but it was exploitation of workers in the broader aspect.
6)Conservative ideology of the management- I feel there was a feeling of levels of people in
the society, as Vikram’s father always warned him having a friend from a lower background.
There was also this concept of Rich getting richer and poorer remaining the same.
7)slowly but surely changing over time- positive outlook appeared even without the main
two character of the story. It was like things coming back to place. The relationship of the
management and the employer with respect to Vikram and Chander’s friendship had a next
level impact. Situations related to wages and compensation were also solved up to some
extent.
Cooperation from the management side came into consideration.

CONCLUSION- expansion and burgeoning of industries, spreading at a fearsome rate

would have more entanglement and involvement of Unions for the sake of growth and
advancement of relations of management, its people and the trade unions involved
functioning. Things would have to be done more strategically than what is done now.
Problems has its place, and will continue. It is what we dealing with the forthcoming
circumstances has to make it effective and on balance productive.

Thankyou.
