YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:


• Outlines are like the blueprint of your writing, as they are the summary, or breakdown, of
main and supporting ideas. The more detail provided in the outline, the easier writing will
become. Just like an architect uses the blueprint to organize the details and plans for the
project they are working on, you will use an outline the same way for your writing.
• Outlining is used to organize information, so that writing does not turn into a frustrating
experience.
They are very beneficial when it comes to organizing information for writing
because they:
1 Put ideas in logical order.
2 Show the relationship between ideas/material/evidence.
3 Provide a summary of main ideas and supporting evidence.

• In every situation, however, you should aim to do the following when creating your outline:
1 List the ideas/information/evidence you would like to include in your writing.
2 From that list, organize ideas/information/evidence ideas into like categories.
3 Arrange those categories into main ideas, and then sub-sections for those main ideas.
4 Organize information/evidence into proper sections to be used as support.
5 Format information into logical order.

Topic Outline
1 Uses phrases only. Basically there are no sentences and verbs.
2 Verbal may also be used. Also means it lists words or phrases.
3 Arranges your ideas hierarchically ( showing which are main and which are sub-
points) in the sequence you want, and shows what you will talk about.
4 Organize information/evidence into proper sections to be used as support.

Sentence Outline
1 Provide more in-depth information than the topic outline.
2 It mainly focuses on the complex issues in details.
3 Every idea is written in complete sentence.
4 Each sentence , instead of simply identifying a mini-topic, is like a mini-thesis
statement about that mini-topic.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:

You have been assigned the task of writing an "orientation" document for incoming Grade 7
students at PCEHS where you attend. You are an experienced junior who is familiar with how
things work and what the experience is like. Your task is to write a document that will help the

What makes an effective leader? To be sure, no one characteristic or trait defines an effective leader.
It is true, however, that effective leaders get the most out of employees or group members by holding them
to very high standards or expectations. Setting high standards increases productivity because people tend
to live up to the expectations set for them by superiors. This is an example of the Pygmalion effect, which
works in a subtle, often unconscious way. When a managerial leader believes that a group member will
succeed, the manager communicates this belief without realizing that he or she is doing so. Conversely,
when a leader expects a group member to fail, that person will not usually disappoint the manager. The
manager’s expectation of success or failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Thus it pays for a manager
to expect the best from employees.

• Author- is the originator of any written work and can also be described as a writer.
• Technique ( Expository or Argumentative, Persuasive, Narrative)
The author’s technique is a technique in which an individual author uses in his writing.
It varies from author and depends upon one’s syntax, word choice and tone.
It is achieved through word choice(diction) , sentence construction and word order (syntax)
and by what viewpoint character focuses on.
Example: Expository Writing Style – is a subject-oriented style. The focus of the writer in
this type of writing style is to tell the readers about a specific subject or topic and in the end
the author leaves out his own opinion about that topic.

• Mood
• It is the feeling you get while reading a story. This could be happiness, sadness, darkness,
anger, suspicion, loneliness, or even excitement. You can think of mood as the atmosphere
of the story.
• Example: The mood of a story can change how we identify the thesis and the characters.If
we read a short story about a lovable nanny, we would expect positive words like cheerful,
loving, and caring. However, we could take that same idea of a nanny and make it more of
a horror story by changing the atmosphere with aggravated, cold, and enraged. We have the
same character, but the author's message and description is much different.

An author's purpose may be to amuse the reader, to persuade the reader, to inform
the reader, or to satirize a condition.

mood? “excitement” is an abstract term conveying the same mood.

window. The sky was black, the wind was loud, and the rain slammed against the broken
windowpane. I shut my eyes, remembering my earlier visit, and I felt so embarrassed and
angry. When I opened them, the lightning bolt flashed and lit up the room once more. I had to
get out of the house; I had to hide. No one could know my horrible mistake. I opened the door,
took a deep breath, and ran into the cold and rain.

By answering these questions, you are on your way to defining the mood and tone. Mood and
tone are important because they help create the meaning of a story.

GENERALIZATION:
• The mood is the atmosphere of the story, and the tone is the author's attitude towards the
topic. We can identify both by looking at the setting, characters, details, and word choices.
By doing so, it will help us find meaning in the story or passage and help us feel more
connected to the writing.

Exercise is Great for your Brain.


It’s linked to less depression, better memory and quicker learning. Studies also suggest that
exercise is, as of now, the best way to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, a major
fear for many Americans.
Scientists don’t know exactly why exercise changes the structure and function of the brain,
but it’s an area of active research. So far, they’ve found that exercise improves blood flow to
the brain, feeding the growth of new blood vessels and even new brain cells, thanks to the
protein BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). BDNF triggers the growth of new neurons
and helps repair and protect brain cells from degeneration. It may also help people focus,
according to recent research.

• The way you communication has a big impact on how you get on with people and get
the things you want. Good communication skills can help you avoid conflict and solve
problems-they’re also important for making friends and having healthy relationships.
Styles
• It is a scale of formality as in the examples from social dialect research.
Types of Communicative Styles
Intimate ➢ It is a style among intimate members of a family or
friends that do not need a complete language with clear
articulation.
➢ It is enough to use short utterances.
➢ Another characteristics of this style is grammar
unnecessarily used here, because it can bring disorder to
this intimate style.
➢ The communication is private.
➢ It is reserved for close family members.

Casual/ ➢ A casual of information sharing typically used in personal

Have you ever met someone that just couldn’t get through to?
There could be many reasons for this , one of the most common reasons is that your
communication “ style” is different than the other person’s communicative style.
One of the best ways to quickly improve the effectiveness of your communication is to adapt
your communication style to match theirs. Let’s have the example of what I mean.

Myla’s husband and she have quite different styles of communication. She likes details
and her husband just want the bottom line. When she gets home from work at the end of the
day and she asks him,“ How was your day?” She was likely to respond with a simple “fine” or
maybe give her a quick summary of one or two of the most important events.

have enough members for at least three teams of two, enough playing cards to give out between 4
and 6 cards to each person, and 15 minutes to spare.

Here’s how the activity works:

1. Cut each playing card into half diagonally, then in half diagonally again, so you have four
triangular pieces for each card.
2. Mix all the pieces together and put equal numbers of cards into as many envelopes as you
have teams.
3. Divide participants up into teams of three or four. You need at least three teams. If you’re
short of people, teams of two will work just as well.
4. Give each team an envelope of playing card pieces.
5. Each team has three minutes to sort its pieces, determine which ones it needs to make
complete cards, and develop a bargaining strategy.
6. After three minutes, allow the teams to start bartering for pieces. Participants can barter on

• When communication is good, we feel good about our relationships. Dr. Susan Heitler (2010)
puts it this way:

When people say, ‘We have a great relationship,’ what they often mean is how they feel
when they talk with one another. They mean, ‘I feel positive toward that person when we
interact. I send and I receive positive vibes with them.’

Besides making our relationships easier, there are also relationship-boosting benefits to good
communication:

1. Effective communication shows respect and value of the other person.


2. It helps us to better understand each other; not all communication is about understanding—
some are intended to fight, dismiss, invalidate, undermine, etc.—but it should be!
3. It makes us feel more comfortable with each other and encourages even more healthy and
effective communication.

Another Types of Communicative Styles


Consultative ➢ It utilizes open-ended questions to get all opinions, to

➢ It builds trust, defines goals and objectives, and sets
specific expectations.
➢ It increases employee participation and balances power.
➢ It increases buy-in during times of change and reassures

Frozen Style ➢ It is the most formal communicative style that is usually used in
respectful situation or formal ceremony.
➢ It is the most formal style of communication wherein the
audience is not allowed to raise questions to the speaker.
➢ It is a style of communication that almost never changes.
➢ It has a fixed and static language and uses long sentences
with good command of grammar.
Example: 1. “I promise to forever surround you with my love.”

GENERALIZATION:
• Your Communication Style is your enduring, persistent, communication patterns
across a variety of situations - it's how people relate to each other.
➢ Consultative Style- It utilizes open-ended questions to get all opinions, to
uncover hidden issues, and reveal personal agendas.
➢ Frozen Style- It is the most formal communicative style that is usually used in
respectful situation or formal ceremony.
