Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

When writing an essay, it is important to organize your thoughts in logical manner. One
way to do this is through outlining. Outlining is the map of your essay. It includes the important
elements to demonstrate a clear and logical organization of the main idea. Students, like you,
can easily do outlining by simply remembering the criteria given above. Main points support
the thesis, main points are logically organized, most important ideas are emphasized and less
important ideas are subordinated, and main points have sufficient and relevant supporting
evidence.

In writing an outline, anyone who intends to write can: (1) make the writing process
easier since you have a road map for your essay to follow; (2) set up a structure with lower
stakes and less pressure; (3) save time writing your essay since you have a clear, focused
plan to follow for your essay; and (4) ensure each part of your essay relates to the essay
prompt.

What’s New
Now that you are familiar and equipped with the necessary knowledge for the next
lesson, let us start through reading two stories which I know you have heard before. This
module, though, will not only teach you how to analyze the given stories, but also to create
something meaningful by sharing your thoughts and ideas.

Before starting, note that these stories are what we call parable. A parable is a short
story based on the teachings in the Bible. A parable illustrates moral values which are helpful
to its readers. To start, complete the sentence stems below by analyzing what you think about
the stories: The Story of a Prodigal Son and The Parable of the Good Samaritan.

Comprehension Questions:
1. Fill in the Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between the two
stories. Write your answers in a separate sheet of paper.

2. Fill in the Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between the father
and the Samaritan. Write your answers in a separate sheet of paper.

3. If you were the father, would you do the same? Why?

4. If you were the Samaritan, would you do the same? Why?

5. From the lessons you gathered from both stories, how would you apply all these in
your life? Give a specific instance where you can apply them.

6. What did you realize from both stories?

Good job! You have answered all the questions! Analyzing and combining all information
presented to create something new is called synthesis. What you did represent these steps
in synthesis according to Menzi (2017):

R – Read two different sources about a topic and record ideas.

E – Edit notes and combine concepts that are similar.
S – Synthesize by combining notes with what you already know about the topic.
T – Think about your new ideas and connect them to what you already know.

To know more about synthesis, read the next part of this module.

What is It
Synthesizing Essential Information
Found in Various Sources

Analyzing and making meaning from information gathered are the day-to-day tasks of
humans. Every day, pieces of facts and opinions are accumulated and generated to create
new meaningful ideas. Telling a story or reporting to your loved ones about your day is a form
of summarizing, analyzing, and making meaning.

6
What is Synthesis?
Synthesis is the combination of different pieces of information into a whole.
Synthesizing is about summarizing and analyzing various sources to create something new
and meaningful. McCombes (2020) views synthesis as going beyond summarizing ideas from
various sources. This means that after summarizing the text, one must analyze and combine
his/her generalization and conclusion to the analysis made.
Synthesis can be best represented with the diagram below:

Source
No. 2 Personal
Source Source Ideas/
Source No. 1 No. 2 Observation
Personal
No. 1 Ideas/
Observation

Synthesized Idea

The pieces in the jigsaw puzzle represent different things: (1) source no. 1; (2) source
no. 2; and (3) your ideas and observation. Once these pieces fit together, a new idea
emerges which is necessary in writing academic essays or research papers. Assignments and
essays are usually the various forms of academic writing which learners, like you, do all the
time. When making assignments, you should not only copy the ideas from your source but
also analyze them to create meaningful interpretation.
Now to fully understand what synthesis is, let us follow a step-by-step approach on
how to make synthesis of various text sources.

1. Brainstorming
• Brainstorming is a way to think and list the things you already
know about the topic. List and provide as many related pieces of
information/ideas/quotes as you can for your chosen topic. The
graphic organizer below can be used for brainstorming:

Focused statement/ideas/quotes
Topic

Focused statement/ideas/quotes

Focused statement/ideas/quotes

2. Reading and Noting Key Points

• Read, research and gather information about the topic you are writing or interested
about. Use a table to organize or summarize your notes and thoughts. Summary is
shortening and condensing a text leaving only important and essential points to easily
grasp the meaning of the text.
• When writing, make specific notes through organization charts or tables to arrange
information in an orderly manner. Effective notetaking includes paraphrasing and
direct quotation.

7
Note:
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, paraphrasing is the process of restatement
or rewording of a text to give it a new taste or form, and to avoid copying the exact idea or
work from others. Paraphrasing means providing a version of a text other than the original
text without replacing it. Effective paraphrasing comprises of these five (5) steps:

1. Read the text carefully and thoroughly to find the main idea.
2. Record or highlight key words related to the main idea.
3. Form new sentences using the key words listed.
4. Compare your work with the original text, but remember that paraphrasing is not
condensing the material, rather it offers another version of the text.
5. Record the sources to credit the author of the original text.

3. Identifying similarities and differences from the sources

• Rereading the original text is essential in synthesis, which
include identifying the similarities and differences among the
sources. The Venn Diagram is an effective tool to show and
highlight these.

4. Analyzing and writing your own statement about the topic

• Pull together the information you gained from various sources read
and write them using your own words. Do not forget to include
citations of information from the source to avoid plagiarism.

To apply these steps, read the passage below, then check whether it conforms to the
standards when it comes to synthesis.

Passage # 1
What Goes Around Comes Around
by Mayel Anne S. Araneta

1The proverb, “What goes around comes around”, has a powerful effect on
humanity. 2Whatever one says or does, good or bad, will eventually come back. 3This
proverb has been around for centuries for many of the wise, in the religious sense, lived
by these words and truly understand the power of thoughts and actions. 4It can be said
that people's actions will eventually have consequences which they will have to deal with,
even though this may not happen for a long time.
5People usually understand the proverb because at some point, they have

experienced the consequences of their actions as karma. 6Good action is returned to

either in this life or the next. 7A possible example of good karma is a woman who in a past
life selflessly cared for the sick, often sacrificing by placing others above herself. 8In her
current life, she is constantly surprised by the generosity of others. 9Bad karma is the
opposite of good karma and acquired by bad deeds, thoughts and/or words. 10Example is
a man who mistreated his sibling in another life. 11This bad action reaped bad karma, and
he was reincarnated in the same role as his sibling.
12All we say and do define what is going to occur to us in the future. 13All karmic

accounts are carried with the soul into the next life and body.

11
Passage # 2

For Every Action, There Is An Equal And Opposite Reaction

by Mayel Anne S. Araneta

1The statement, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” derives
from Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion which means that in every interaction, there is a
pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects. 2The amount of the forces on the first
object amount to the size of the force on the second object.
3Simply put, Newton proposed to describe the laws of physics in the material

universe in a scientific lens—but it also expresses the truth of our spiritual reality.
4We know that physical energy, when applied, will cause a reaction, and that no

force or energy vanishes into nothingness.

5Everyone’s actions have a ripple and boomerang effect in someone’s life. 6This

law states that there is an exchange of power from one form to another.
7When you apply this law to human life it works like this: 8If you do good deeds,

and live your life morally, you will surely live a happy life as an equivalent reaction. 9And
same goes for the opposite reaction.
11So this is not only the law of physics but life.

Now, answer these questions:

Passage # 1
Essential Information: _______________________________________________________
Personal Ideas: ____________________________________________________________

“Generosity makes you healthier. When you do something good for another
person, you encourage the release of endorphins (otherwise known as the
“feel good” chemicals) in your body which brings about a “helper’s high” and
helps fight stress. Research has also proven that having a generous attitude
greatly improves one’s immune system, extends a person’s lifespan, and acts
as antidote to pain.”

“When we give to others it activates the areas of the brain associated with
pleasure, social connection and trust.
Altruistic behavior releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness
for us as well as the people we help. Studies have shown that giving money away
tends to make people happier than spending it on themselves.”

“Helping others is not only good for people and a good thing to do, it also
makes us happier and healthier too. Giving also connects us to others, creating
stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone. And
it’s not all about money – we can also give our time, ideas and energy.”

with wider community and societal wellbeing. Giving to others helps us connect
with people and meets one of our basic human needs - relatedness.”
