Topic: Expository essay

Instructional Resources: Palm front and a razor blade.

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be


able to:

Explain expository essay.

STEP 1: Identification of prior idea.

MODE: The entire class

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher introduces the lesson by explaining


that in order to succeed in a clear or detailed
explanation as it is needed in expository essay,
the writer should see himself as a competent
teacher who has a clear idea of what he has to
others so that they will know it as he does. It
explained a process, an entity, etc which took
place in the past, in the present or which will
happen in the future. It is also known as
explanatory essay. As the name implied, the
writer tries to impose, explain, inform, instruct
and direct the reader on a given course of action.
It entails having prior and full understanding of
the topic of the essay. For this reason, it is
important for the writer to put himself in the
position of a competent teacher. The learner in
the position of an ignorant learner. Bearing this in
mind, he now expose every aspect of the topic
with a view to making the learner achieve mastery
of every detail involved. The function is to explain.

STEP 2: Exploration

STUDENT’S ACTIVITY: The teacher asks the students to mention the


main types of expository essay.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher tells the students that there are six
major types of expository essay.

(a) Process explanation: It uses step by step


organization to explain how something
happen, works or is done.
(b) Causes and effect: It identifies the cause
and effect of something and examines the
relationship between cause and effects.
(c) Comparison and contrast: It examines
similarities and differences to find
relationship and draw conclusions.
(d) Definition: It explains a term or concept by
listening and examining its qualities or
characteristics
(e) Classification: It organizes subjects into
categories.
(f) Problem/solution: It examines aspect of a
complex problem and explores or proposes
possible solution.

STEP 3: Discussion

STUDENT’S ACTIVITY: The teacher asks the students to explain how to


cook egusi soup friend method.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher discusses how to cook egusi soup


with the students. How to cook egusi soup with
vegetable. This Igbo style melon seeds soup is
traditionally made variety of ingredients such as
dried fish, assorted meats and condiments. There
is a distinct taste in this dish due to higher
proportion of melon seed and leafy vegetables
sparingly used.

Ingrediants: 200g ground pumpkin (egusi) seed,


400g of beef, 50g of cooked and boned stock fish
piece. 3 spoons of ground dried crayfish, small
bunch of ugu or bitter leaves, 50ml of palm oil, 2
seasoning cubes, 1 small onions, 4 large
tomatoes, 1 tea spoon of chili powder.

Directions: (1) Cut the beef into bite size pieces


seasoned with one chopped onion and one
seasoning cube. Add half a cup of water and
boiled for about 10 minutes or until tender

(2) Mix the ground egusi in a half cup of water.


Also blend the tomatoes, one onion and chilli. (3)
Heat the palm oil in another pot and add the egusi
mixture, stir well and allow the egusi to fry a little
add the ground crayfish, second seasoning cube
and stock fish and stir well (4) Add 2 cups of water
and allow to cook for five minutes. Then add the
boiled meat and stir, turn, heat down and simmer
for a 2 minutes (5) wash and finely slice the ugu
leaves. Add to the simmering soup and stir in.
continue to simmer for 5 minutes to allow the
vegetable to soften. Serve with eba, fuf,
sermovita, pounded yam etc.

ASSIGNMENT: Write an expository essay on how to make


brooms.
