STUDENT’S ACTIVITY: The teacher asks the students to explain a debate/argumentative essay
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher explains that argumentative essay is
the same as debate. A debate is presented orally while argumentative essay is in written form. Persuasion is the watchword (core aim) in this type of essay writing. Your choice of words should be such that would persuade the reader into believing in your point of view. Your position is similar to that of a prosecuting lawyer who will use every word and sentence structure in his power to compel readers to believe and agree with your view. Argumentative essay is an essay which tries to persuade or convinced listeners or readers to act in a certain way. This type of essay requires you to present an issue that has two sides with a view to persuade or convince the reader to see the issue from the angle the writer has seen it and also agree with the point of view being presented. In essence, it involves argument.

STUDENT’S ACTIVITY: The teacher asks the students to mention the people who are usually involve in the argument.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher mentions the people involved in
argumentative essay/debate. These include the chairman, the panel of judges, the time keepers, the audience and the debaters.

STUDENT’S ACTIVITY: The teacher asks the students to identify the rules of argumentative essay.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY The teacher guides the students to mention and
discuss the following rules, timing, presentation, elocution, gesture and accuracy.
1. Timing: Your argument must be within the
time-limit provide e.g. if the rules say you should speak for 2 minutes, you must exceed that limit. 2. Presentation: This is the manner you adopt in communicating ideas to your listeners. It must be adequate. 3. Elocution: means good, clear speaking in public, you must speak well and clearly. This involves adequate control of your voice and correct pronunciation of words. 4. Gesture: To command and hold attention of your audience you must learn to speak fluently and marshal (conduct) your points with good gesture. 5. Accuracy: The points you establish in your argument whether for an essay or for debate must be accurate. They should be acceptable facts supporting your point of view. You must find to research the topic. This will help you to obtain the valid needed in supporting your argument. STEP 4: Application

vocatives of a debate.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY: The teacher guides the students to say the
vocatives thus. The chairman, panel of judges, accurate time keeper, co-debaters, ladies and gentlemen.
