TEACHING PROCEDURES :

Introduction (3-5 minutes)

1. Teacher pastes a poster on the blackboard. The poster is on the Sports Event.
2. Teacher writes several titles of events such as
a) A visit to a Funfair
b) Festival Celebration – Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas and Chinese New Year.
c) School’s Sports Day
3. Teacher asks students to give a few more events and then, introduces the lesson.

Development (60 minutes)


Activity 1 (20 minutes)
1. Teacher asks students if they know the use of ADJECTIVES.
2. Teacher refreshers the students’ knowledge on ADJECTIVES via explaining the use of
ADJECTIVES (see Appendix 1).
3. Teacher asks students to list out several adjectives on board. This is done in groups
of 7 or 8. The aim is to find out whether they know the word categories particularly
adjectives.
4. Teacher relates the adjectives with the next activity.

Activity 2 (30 minutes)


1. Students are taught on the format of writing an essay specifically on descriptive
writing. (see Appendix 2)
2. Students are told to get into groups of six or seven.
3. Each group is required to write a descriptive essay. They have to choose only one
event that is stated on the board, either:
a) A visit to a Funfair
b) Festival Celebration
c) School’s Sports Day
4. The students are required to use the format that have been taught. They are also
encouraged to use as many adjectives as they can.
5. Teacher asks students to underline the adjectives that they used.

Activity 3 (20 minutes)


1. Each group is required to elect one leader.
2. The leader, as a representative of the group has to read their work in front of the
class, and the other groups have to and list down the adjectives being used.
3. This activity continues until all the groups have presented their work.

Conclusion (5-10 minutes)


1. Teacher asks the students or each group to hand in their work.
2. Teacher concludes of today’s lesson.

FURTHER ASSIGNMENT : No further assignment is given because they have


done it in group work.

SELF-EVALUATION : The students really enjoyed themselves. They prefer


to do work in groups rather than individually.

APPENDIX 1
ADJECTIVES & ADJECTIVE PHRASES
1. Adjectives
- Modifies the nouns.
- Narrowly define the sense of the noun by ascribing a certain attributes or
characteristics to it.

2. Adjective Phrase (AP) can consist of one or more than one.


Eg: The disgustingly fat dog chased the amazingly thin girl.

3. It is possible to modify a noun with > than one adjectives.


Eg: The ferocious fat brown dog chased the girl.

4. Adjectives can be divided into 2 categories:


a) Attribute – adjectives may be placed before a NOUN.
Eg: The juicy apple.
The red apple.
The afraid dog.

b) Predicative – adjectives may be placed after a NOUN or verb-to-be.


Eg: The apple is juicy.
The apple is red.
The is afraid.

5. Two types of adjectives:


a) Possessive Adjectives – my, yours, his, her, its, our, their.
b) Demonstrative Adjectives – this, these, that, those.

6. Positive Adjectives – to compare two person, animals, or objects which are the SAME.
Eg: Your rabbit is as cute as mine.

7. Comparative Adjectives – to compare two person, animals or objects which are not
the SAME.
Eg: He is fatter than his brother.

8. Superlative – to compare three or more person, animals or objects.


Eg: Cheetah is the fastest animal.in the world.

TEACHING PROCEDURES :

Introduction (5-8 minutes)

1. Teacher writes a short sentence on the board.


Eg: the book is on the table.

2. Based on the sentence, students are required to categorize the words (each word)
into its own category.
Eg: The – determiner
book – noun
is – verb
on – preposition
table – noun

3. Teacher introduces the lesson of the day, that is on prepositions and the
continuation from the previous topic “Description of Events”.

Development (60 minutes)


Activity 1 (25 minutes)
1. Teacher writes the rules on prepositions and prepositional phrase on the board and
the students have to copy the rules in their grammar book. (see Appendix 1)
2. Teacher asks students whether they understand the rules or not.
3. Teacher explains the rules and gives several examples, so that the students will
understand better.
4. Teacher gives exercise on PREPOSITIONS & PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE. (see
Appendix 2)

Activity 2 (35 minutes)


1. Students are asked to get into their groups (as in their previous class, the same
group when they were asked to write a descriptive essay)
2. Students are asked to discuss within their groups on the essay that they have
written and they have to write dialogues
3. They are asked to make a role-play using the dialogues.
4. Students are given 20 minutes to discuss and come out with the dialogues.
5. Teacher gives another 15 minutes for the students to practice their role-play. (The
role-play will be presented on Friday)

Conclusion (5-10 minutes)


3. Teacher reminds the students on Friday’s presentation.
4. Teacher concludes of today’s lesson.

FURTHER ASSIGNMENT : No further assignment is given because they have the


exercise that is given in class and they have to
prepare for a role-play.

APPENDIX 1
PREPOSITIONS & PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

1. Prepositional phrase (pp) consists of PREP + OBJECT.


2. The object of preposition is a NOUN or PRONOUN.
3. In most English sentences, ‘place’ comes before ‘time’.
Eg: We went to (the zoo) in the (afternoon.)

4. Sometimes, a prepositional phrase comes at the beginning of a sentence.


Eg: In the afternoon, we went to the zoo.

5. Common prepositions:

6. Types of PREPOSITIONS:
a. Prepositions of place – against, around, across, between, opposite, underneath,
above, and by. Eg: The boys swam across the river.

b. Prepositions of directions – along, into, towards, off and onto. Eg: Nizam put his
hand into the cookie jar.

c. Prepositions of time – after, within, during, until, since, for and before. Eg: The
children continued playing until the sun had set.

d. Prepositions of purpose – so that, for, in order to. Eg: You have to be a member of
the library in order to borrow books.

LANGUAGE PRACTICE
EXERCISE 1: Find the subjects (s), verbs (v), objects (o) and prepositional phrase (pp) in
the following sentences.

1. Jack put the letter in the mailbox.

2. Before, the presentation starts, each group has to draw lots to determine which
group goes first.

1. Teacher asks the first group to present in front of the class.
2. Each group is given about 5-8 minutes for their presentation.
3. For each presentation, teacher gives praises to motivate the students.

1. Teacher congratulates the class for their excellent team work and cooperation.

2. Teacher asks the students of what they are. It starts with the letter ‘F’.
3. After the students guess, teacher relates to today’s lesson via distributing pictures
on SEA Games.

Development (60 minutes)


Activity 1 (30 minutes)
1. Teacher distributes the reading texts to the class. Each student will receive one
reading text.
2. Students are asked to read on their own silently for about 5 minutes. They are
required to read as well as to underline certain words that they do not understand.
3. After they have finished reading the text, teacher chooses one students from each
row (randomly) to read the passage out loud. The others have to listen and correct
the reader’s pronunciation if there is any mistake.
4. Teacher asks the students whether they understand the passage or not. Teacher also
asks them whether they have any question to ask. If there is any, teacher responds to
their question.

Activity 2 (30 minutes)


1. Teacher writes certain words and their meanings on the board:
a. Consistent – continually keeping the same score.
b. Prowess – great ability
c. Lanes – a narrow path
d. Guts- bravery and determination
e. Gauge – to make judgement
2. Based on these words, the students are asked to form sentences. A sentence for each
word.
3. Then, teacher ask students to take out their books and do the comprehension. They
must copy the comprehension questions written by the teacher on the board.
4. Teacher gives them time to finish their work. The exercise must be handed in before
the period ends.

Conclusion (10 minutes)


1. Teacher asks students to pass their books.
2. Teacher checks who did not do their homework.
3. Teacher reviews on today’s lesson.
4. Teacher ends the class.

Introduction (10 minutes)


1. Teacher asks students to choose one object that they can find.
2. Teacher then calls out students randomly to say their object. Once they are chosen,
teacher then asks them to fill in the blank of the sentences given:
Eg: “He puts his head in a ____________ .“
3. After that, the student is required to categorize the word categories.
4. Teacher than introduces the lesson of the day.

Development (65 minutes)


Activity 1 (30 minutes)
1. Teacher asks the students to list several prepositions on the board.
2. Teacher asks them of the function. Then, teacher explains to the class about
prepositions and gives exercise to test the students understanding.

Activity 2 (30 minutes)


1. Teacher gives a scenario to the students. “They are at a fast food restaurant and the
first thing that the waiter or waitress will ask them is “Eat here or take-away”.
2. Teacher then takes “take-away” as an example to introduce students to phrasal verb
(verb and prepositions combination).
3. Teacher tells the class that even though ‘away’ is a preposition, it is not considered
one, in this case, it is called phrasal verb where a verb is combined with a preposition.
4. Teacher explains more about phrasal verb and then asks students to give some
examples of phrasal verb.
5. Teacher then gives exercises on phrasal verb.
6. Students are required to complete the exercise and hand in on the next class.

Conclusion (10 minutes)


1. Teacher revises the lesson again (briefly).
2. Teacher reminds the students not to forget to pass up their work.
3. Teacher ends the class.

1. Teacher gives students 8 minutes to come out with at least 5 words that consists /e/
sound.
2. The sound can be at the initial, middle, or end of the words.
3. Teacher explains to students that they are going to play a game called HANGMAN.
4. Teacher starts the game.

Conclusion (3-5 minutes)


1. Teacher concludes today’s lesson.
