The monitor exports a patient record as soon as it is closed. If required, the user may have to
review and verify the record before it is exported. If a record exports successfully, it turns green
in the Patient Records table. If the network is unavailable, the monitor tries to resend the record
every 60 seconds.

Patient records that do not contain a primary ID (ID Unknown appears in the record) are not
exported. For information about configuring patient IDs, see “Configuring Patient ID Settings” on
page 4-16.

For detailed information about the exported HL7 data, see the SureSigns VS3 Data Export Guide.

Site Preparation
Before installing the wireless VS3 monitors, review all of the following sections in this chapter:

• “Wireless System Requirements” on page 2-1 — Review the system requirements and
verify that the VS3 monitor with the wireless bridge is compatible with your current or
planned wireless network.
• “Environmental Requirements” on page 2-2 — Verify that the environment in which the
equipment is to be used meets the specified temperature and humidity requirements.
• “802.11 Wireless Site Planning” on page 2-3 — Assess the intended installation site for RF
interference or other factors that could degrade wireless performance.
• “Safety” on page 2-4 — Verify that all safety requirements are met.

Wireless System Requirements

The VS3 monitor has been tested with the following model and firmware versions:

• ProCurve M111 Client bridge, product number J9389A

• Firmware version 5.3.5 or later

Wireless Modes
The M111 bridge supports the following IEEE wireless networking standards:

• 802.11g, which specifies a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbps and an operating
frequency of 2.4 GHz
• 802.11b, which specifies a maximum data transfer rate of 11 Mbps and an operating
frequency of 2.4 GHz
• 802.11a, which specifies a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbps and an operating
frequency of 5 GHz
All wireless devices in your network must comply with either 802.11g, 802.11b, or 802.11a. The
Auto selection option on the bridge automatically selects the correct frequency band when
connecting to an access point (AP) or router.

Wireless Security Options

Caution To protect confidential patient data, Philips recommends that you enable the strongest
wireless security option supported by your wireless network.

The following wireless security modes and encryption types are available on the M111 bridge:

• 802.1X — Supports WEP encryption. Requires a RADIUS server for authentication.

• WPA — Supports TKIP encryption. Requires either a RADIUS server or a pre-shared key
(PSK) for authentication.
• WPA2 — Supports AES/CCMP encryption. Requires either a RADIUS server or a
pre-shared key (PSK) for authentication.

Site Preparation
SureSigns VS3 Wireless Installation and Setup Guide 2-1
Environmental Requirements

Note — If you use RADIUS for authentication, the RADIUS client must be configured on the AP,
router, or controller, not on the M111 bridge.

By default, the M111 bridge is compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2
(FIPS-140-2) for computer security; however, the M111 bridge also supports the Payment Card
Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS 1.2). For more information, see the HP ProCurve M111
Management and Configuration Guide on the SureSigns VS3 and VS4 Service Documentation CD.

EAP Authentication Methods

The bridge supports the following Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) methods:

• PEAP version 0/PEAP version 1 — Both require the use of a RADIUS server by the remote AP
or router.
• EAP-TLS — Requires that the remote AP or router provide support for authentication via a
RADIUS server.
• EAP-TTLS — Requires that the remote AP or router provide support for authentication via a
RADIUS server. The bridge only supports MS-CHAP V2 as the inner EAP protocol.
• EAP-FAST — Uses an encrypted tunnel to distribute pre-shared keys.

Fast Roaming
The M111 bridge offers a Fast Roaming feature that allows the M111 to quickly switch between two
APs with the same SSID operating on the same channel; however, in some cases, enabling this
feature can add delays, depending on the network topology.

For more information on Fast Roaming, see the HP ProCurve M111 Management and Configuration
Guide on the SureSigns VS3 and VS4 Service Documentation CD.

802.11 Wireless Site Planning

Patient monitors with a wireless network connection have advantages, however the flexibility the
wireless link offers is not without challenges. The reliability and quality of the wireless signal
transmission through the air and hospital walls are governed by a number of variables that can be
difficult to control. A wireless network connection from a patient monitor cannot be as dependable
as a wired network connection.

The effect of low signal strength and interference can range from a momentary loss of data to a
lengthy period of data loss. Although data loss can occur during the wireless transmission,
monitoring and alarms continue at the patient monitor. If the network connection is lost and then
restored, unsent records that are still on the monitor are sent to the receiving system.

Frequency Management
Frequency management is the selection of the frequencies for wireless devices within a facility to
prevent interference between devices. Frequency management is the responsibility of the hospital.
Philips Medical Systems has no control over the RF environment in the hospital. If interference
exists at the operating frequencies, the wireless system will be affected.

Site planning requires an assessment of existing 802.11 devices in the desired coverage area, as
well as other devices that may cause interference in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands.

Caution To achieve an acceptable performance level, RF activity must be managed. In some sites, the
use model and floor plan ensure that overloading will not occur. In other sites, active device
management may be necessary (that is, restricting the number of wireless monitors in use in
the area).

To avoid interference, position the receiving system a minimum of 6 m (20 ft) from microwave
ovens and do not place a microwave between the receiving system and the wireless monitors.
Other devices that might be found in the hospital that can radiate in these ranges and create
interference are:

• Other wireless networks

• Some wireless telephone headsets
• Devices using BlueTooth technology
• Cordless telephones
• Some programming devices for pacemakers
• Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
• Wireless mice
• Devices using ZigBee technology, for example wireless headphones
It is essential that a central authority in the hospital track and license (if required by local
regulations) all wireless devices used within the facility. A spectrum analyzer can be used to
determine the existence of interference. Philips recommends that continuous, steady state
interference determined at the time of installation is captured as part of the site installation record.
This “noise floor” can be used as a baseline for future assessment if interference problems arise
after installation.

Safety

Location

Warning The 802.11 bridge must be operated at least 20 cm (8 in.) from any person. This is necessary to
ensure that the product is operated in accordance with the Radio Frequency (RF) Guidelines for
Human Exposure.

The location, security, and integrity of wired active network components (the receiving system) is a
critical step in site planning and network design. They should be located in places inaccessible to
patients and clinicians but convenient to service and support personnel. Typically, this is a locked
wiring closet or room specifically designed for network equipment. This ensures that they are
secure from unauthorized access and that required electrical and environmental conditions can be
maintained.

Safety
SureSigns VS3 vital signs monitors are suitable for use in all establishments, as defined by CISPR 11,
including domestic establishments and those directly connected to the public low-voltage power
supply network that supplies buildings used for domestic purposes.

Accessory equipment connected to the data interface of the VS3 monitor must be certified
according to EN Standard 60950 for data-processing equipment or EN Standard 60601-1 for
electromedical equipment. All combinations of equipment must be in compliance with EN Standard
60601-1-1 systems requirements.

Anyone who connects additional equipment to the signal input port or signal output port
configures a medical system and is therefore responsible to ensure that the system complies with
the requirements of system standard EN Standard 60601-1-1. If in doubt, contact the Philips
Customer Care Center or your local Philips representative.

The VS3 monitor and its accessories must be tested by qualified service personnel at regular
intervals to ensure that performance has not been degraded by aging or environmental conditions.
Periodic performance verification tests can be performed, as described in the SureSigns VS3
Service Guide.

It is essential that all personnel in the care of individuals or the service of equipment associated
with patient care within the context of a clinical setting, service attention, or otherwise, provide for
the proper handling of ePHI (electronic protected health information) or PHI (protected health
information) by maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and the availability of ePHI data.

Each organization using this product must provide the protective means necessary to safeguard
ePHI/PHI consistent with each country law, code, and regulation and developed and maintained
company policy with respect to managing ePHI/PHI. While the handling of ePHI is outside the
scope of this document, in general, each organization is responsible for the identification of who
has access to ePHI/PHI data and under what conditions an individual has authorization to use that
data, how ePHI/PHI is stored and the conditions by which it is stored, and finally how ePHI/PHI is
transmitted and the conditions under which that data is transmitted.

If your network covers an area served by more than one power distribution system, be sure all
safety grounds are securely interconnected.

Network cables may occasionally be subject to hazardous transient voltages (caused by lightning
or disturbances in the electrical power grid).

Handle exposed metal components of the network with caution.

An M111 and all interconnected equipment must be installed indoors within the same building
(except for outdoor models/antennas), including all PoE-powered network connections as
described by Environment A of the IEEE 802.3af standard.

mixture with air or oxygen or nitrous oxide. Oxygen concentrations must be <25% and partial
pressure <27.5 kPa when no other oxidants are present.
Electric shock hazard. Covers should be removed only by qualified service personnel. There are
no user-serviceable parts inside.
To ensure patient electrical isolation, connect only to other equipment that provides patient
electrical isolation and use unshielded network cables.
If multiple instruments are interconnected or if multiple instruments are connected to a patient,
the sum of the leakage currents may exceed the limits given in IEC/EN60601-1-1.
Electromagnetic interference may cause disruption of performance. Protect the VS3 monitor
from sources of intense electromagnetic radiation. This device is designed to provide resistance
to electromagnetic interference; however, because of the proliferation of radio-frequency
transmitting equipment and other sources of electrical noise (such as cellular phones, mobile
two-way radios, and electrical appliances) in the healthcare environment, it is possible that
high levels of such interference due to close proximity or strength of a source, may result in
disruption of performance of this device. Disruption may be evidenced by erratic readings,
cessation of operation or other incorrect functioning. If this occurs, the site of use should be
surveyed to determine the source of this disruption, and actions taken to eliminate the source. If
you need assistance, contact the Philips Customer Care Center or your local Philips
representative.
Disposing of the VS3 monitor: To avoid contaminating or infecting personnel, the environment or
other equipment, make sure you disinfect and decontaminate the VS3 monitor appropriately
before disposing of it in accordance with your country’s laws for equipment containing
electrical and electronic parts. For information about cleaning and disinfecting the monitor and
its components, see the SureSigns VS3 Instructions for Use.
For disposal of parts and accessories, where not otherwise specified, follow local regulations
regarding disposal of hospital waste. Also, delete all patient information. For instructions on
deleting patient data, see the SureSigns VS3 Service Guide.
Professional installation required. Prior to installing or using an M111, consult with a
professional installer trained in RF installation and knowledgeable in local regulations
including building and wiring codes, safety, channel, power, indoor/outdoor restrictions, and
license requirements for the intended country. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure
that installation and use comply with local safety and radio regulations.

DHCP server address pool, and the management tool is no longer accessible at the default address
of 192.168.1.1.

To maintain access to the management tool at a known IP address, you can use one of the
following strategies:

• Pre-configure the DHCP server on the network to assign a specific IP address to the M111. To
do this, you need to specify the M111 MAC address and a reserved IP address on the DHCP
server. The M111 MAC address is printed on the M111 label identified as Wireless Base MAC, or
listed on the management tool Home or Login page as Wireless MAC address.
• Assign a static IP address to the M111, as described in the following procedure.

Configuring the Bridge and Monitor

4-8 SureSigns VS3 Wireless Installation and Setup Guide
Configuration Procedures

Note — Philips recommends that you also define a management address. This is a secondary IP
address on which you can reach the management tool. Defining the management address
ensures that you can connect to the bridge even if you lose the connection, or if you are
using DHCP and do not know the specific IP address of the bridge. See the procedure in
“Assigning a Management Address” on page 4-9.

To assign a static IP address to the M111:

Step

1 On the management tool home page, click the Network tab, and then click Ports.

2 In the Port configuration table, click Bridge port.

4 In the Port settings section, configure the following settings:

• IP address: Set the IP address on the same subnet as the AP to which the M111 will
connect once installed. Respect any DHCP server-mandated static address
ranges. For this scenario, use 192.168.5.11.
• Mask: Set the corresponding mask for the IP address. This scenario uses the mask
255.255.255.0.
• Default gateway: If using a gateway on your network, set the IP address of the
gateway.

5 Click Save.
The IP address of the M111 immediately changes, causing you to lose your connection
to the management tool. This is normal.
To re-establish the connection, change the static IP address on your computer so that
it is on the same subnet as the M111. For this scenario, use 192.168.5.12.

6 To re-launch the management tool, open the web browser on your computer and
enter the IP address that you assigned to the M111 in step 4: 192.168.5.11.

Assigning a Management Address

A management address is a secondary, static IP address that provides a fixed address where the
M111 management tool can be reached using either Port 1 or the Wireless port.

Note — The management address must be on a different subnet than the IP address currently
assigned to the bridge port.

To assign a management address:

Step

1 On the management tool home page, click the Network tab, and then click Ports.

2 In the Port configuration table, click Bridge port.

DHCP server on the wireless network.
• If you used MAC address cloning, the VS3 monitor will automatically connect to the wireless
network using the cloned MAC address.

Configuring Patient ID Settings

You can specify the patient ID input fields that correspond to the patient record requirements of
your facility and EHR system. For example, if your facility uses a medical record number (MRN) as
the primary method for identifying patients, you can designate the MRN as the Primary
Identification.

The field you designate as the Primary Identification appears in each patient record in the Patient
Records table.

Only records that have a primary patient ID can be exported over a LAN or WLAN network. If a
record does not contain a primary ID (ID Unknown appears in the record), the data is not exported.

For details about configuring patient IDs, see the SureSigns VS3 Installation and Configuration
Guide.
