Oxygenation
1. Define pulse oximetry?
It is a test that determines the amount of oxygen in the blood. This is a
simple, painless test that evaluates how well oxygen is delivered to body areas
farthest from the heart, such as the arms and legs. This can be utilized in a variety of
conditions, including checking the health of someone who has a disorder that
impacts the blood oxygen level such as heart attack, asthma, COPD and many
more.
2. What is ABG or arterial blood gases? What are some of its indications?
An arterial blood gas (ABG) test measures oxygen and carbon dioxide levels
in your blood. It also measures your body’s acid-base (pH) level, which is usually in
balance when you’re healthy. This test determines how well your lungs can transport
oxygen into the bloodstream and eliminate carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
This indicates respiratory failure in acute and chronic states and also any severe
illness which may lead to a metabolic acidosis such as Cardiac failure, liver failure,
renal failure, sepsis, burns, multiorgan failure.
