First conversations

Exercise 1. It is important to find things in common when responding to what people tell you.
Match each comment to a response. 
1. I've been to Italy a few times.
2. I studied mechanical engineering at uni.
3. I grew up just outside Madrid.
4. So these are the new offices.
5. Business is a bit challenging at the moment.

a. I know the city quite well but not the region around it.
b. Really? My brother did something similar and now works in construction.
c. Indeed, but I read that things should be improving by the year end.
d. Impressive. Looks like a nice place to work. Our offices are very different.

Exercise 2. Closed questions, which require a 'yes' or 'no' answer, can also help small talk. One
way to ask closed questions is to make a statement followed by a short question tag, for example:
You've been here before, haven't you?
Complete the following closed questions by adding the correct question tag:
1. It's a lovely day today, isn't it?
2. You are a student, aren't you?
3. You're taking the same course as we are, aren't you?
4. You don't live in the campus, do you?
5. You've seen the new weekly schedule, haven't you?
6. You didn't meet out new colleague yesterday, did you?
7. You don't need to leave before 7 pm, do you?
8. You watched the football match last night, haven't you?
9. You will speak to our tutor later, will you?
